About the job

About the job

Skovvang is the only special care home in the Aarhus municipality. Our residents have a high level of dementia, and our staff are dementia specialists. This means that all our employees are passionate about working with dementia and about how to make everyday life best possible for our residents.

Citizens are offered a place at Skovvang if, due to a dementia illness, they have particular challenges or needs that make it impossible to live at the municipality's other nursing homes.

Our house is newly built and designed to be dementia-friendly based on research and experience that it should be a home for people with a need for a particular way of living. We have 125 apartments distributed across five departments, of which 93 are permanent special housing, and 32 are short-term housing for relief and clarification of housing needs. In addition, we have a day center, which is a specialized offer for home-dwelling citizens with dementia or dementia-like symptoms.

Skovvang is built around a shared garden with path systems that give our residents the opportunity to take walks in a safe environment. There is direct access to the garden from all five departments and each department has one or more private terraces or balconies.

At Skovvang we always keep in mind to ensure the framework for a safe and good life with homeliness and well-being for our residents. We believe that good activity offers create life and joy for both our residents and employees. Every other week the residents enjoy the visiting dog Cookie, while on other days we dance to music, play table tennis or meet for a good meal, an intimate live concert or a storytelling session. It is also important for us that our residents can feel the changing seasons, therefore we focus on preserving traditions during the holidays.

You will become part of a multidisciplinary staff group with the common goal that we love to work with people with dementia. We base our care on person-centered care in everything we do, which means we always see the person before the disease, and we plan care and support according to each individual’s needs. Relationship before task is a part of person-centered care. Therefore, relationship building is important in the job as a social and health assistant at Skovvang, primarily the relationship with our residents, but also their relatives.

We have big professional ambitions for the house and we are very much looking forward to welcoming new, engaged employees who will contribute to making the department a place with high professionalism and above all homely coziness and safety for our residents.

We want to point out that the position is within the 24-hour care area. Currently, the service is expected to be mainly in the evening shift.

Duevænget is currently in a process where we will convert 12 short-term places into 12 permanent housing units for citizens with a dementia diagnosis who require specialized care.

The evening shift at our place

When you start your evening shift with us, the day’s activities are coming to an end, and the focus shifts to creating a calm and secure end to the day. You help residents with dinner, personal care and getting ready for bed, while you contribute to creating cozy moments and a smooth transition into the night.

In the evening there is often time and need for 1:1 interaction, where you support the individual resident through conversations, relaxation, sensory experiences or simply by being a reassuring and present support. You also closely monitor residents’ well-being and are attentive to sleep, restlessness, anxiety and other changes, so that the necessary care and observation are always in place.

As part of the evening shift you share responsibility for creating a calm and recognizable atmosphere where residents feel safe and well cared for. You work closely with colleagues, nurses and relatives and ensure that important observations and information are documented and passed on to the next shift.

When weather and residents’ wishes permit, the evening may also include a quiet walk or a calm activity that fits the twilight pace and supports the sense of presence, calm and quality of life.

Your profile

We are looking for a social and health care helper who

  • Is trained as a social- and health care helper, preferably with experience in dementia care.
  • Has strong professional competencies in observation and care, while also being able to think pedagogically and creatively.
  • Has a genuine passion for dementia care, seeing it as a core task to create meaning, structure and quality of life for residents with dementia.
  • Is professionally curious about knowledge about dementia and the challenges the disease presents — e.g., fluctuating functional levels, need for fixed routines, communication challenges, sensory needs and varying cognitive abilities.
  • Is comfortable both working in a team and in 1:1 interactions — you can navigate between supporting the social community and providing personal closeness to the resident who needs it.
  • Has the ability to see each individual’s resources and history — you are interested in life history and work with incorporating it into daily life, activities and pedagogy.
  • Contributes to ways of moving together with residents — you will participate in outings, exercise-adapted activities and finding levels that fit the individual.
  • Is flexible, patient and sturdy — dementia can bring unpredictability, confusion or restlessness, and you can remain calm, be present and adapt the effort to the situation.
  • Is a good communicator — with residents, with relatives, with colleagues; able to explain, listen and build trust. Values close collaboration with relatives and understands that they are also part of the resident’s life world, and sometimes are young and in difficult situations.
  • Willingness and ability for multidisciplinary collaboration — to work with physiotherapist, occupational therapist, nurse and others so the effort is holistic.
  • Is open to development and further education
  • Contributes with other meaningful activities beyond those we mention

Why you should choose us

At Duevænget we prioritize a working environment where psychological safety is not just a slogan but a fundamental part of everyday life.

We want to be a workplace where

  • You can ask questions, express insecurity or share concerns without fearing negative consequences.
  • Mistakes/challenges are viewed as opportunities for learning – we help each other reflect and find better solutions together.
  • There is mutual respect and tolerance among colleagues and towards management – different perspectives, professionalism and experiences are seen as resources.
  • Communication is open and appreciative – both when things go well and when something is difficult. We value honesty and feedback, and we adapt together.
  • You feel valued for what you contribute – both in small daily actions and in bigger tasks. We strive to ensure that everyone is heard and respected.
  • There is support and sparring available – both professionally and personally. When you need help, ideas, or just to talk something through, we stand together.

We believe that when employees feel safe, acknowledged and seen, it leads to better well-being, higher quality of work, more creativity, and ultimately better care for our residents.

You will be well prepared when you start. We have a longer introduction period than others, and you will be introduced to working with people with dementia from a person-centered approach. Your colleagues are specialized in the topic and are ready to teach.

At Skovvang you will work with many skilled and dedicated people. Everyone is eager to be here and does their best to ensure residents feel well. The staff should also feel good, and therefore we place a high value on a good working environment and well-being. So whether you are newly graduated or have many years of experience, we are ready to take you on board.
