Who are we?

The department and clinic's organization as well as tasks

The Spine Surgery, Joint and Connective Tissue Diseases Department (RLB) is the Capital Region's only rheumatology department/clinic and also includes a large spinal surgery function, serving both the Capital Region and Region Zealand.

The rheumatology tasks are managed across several external functions, a satellite function and Rigshospitalet's 2 campuses. The spinal surgery function is managed solely at Rigshospitalet, Valdemar Hansens Vej.

RLB at Rigshospitalet, Valdemar Hansens Vej houses three medical specialties: orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and rheumatology. The department is built around interdisciplinary patient pathways.

The Clinic for Joint and Connective Tissue Diseases consists of an evaluation unit, an inflammatory treatment ambulatory, an ultrasound function, an interdisciplinary spinal clinic. There is no rheumatology inpatient ward or beds on campus.

The clinic oversees a supervisory function at North Zealand’s hospital, the medical function at SANO Skælskør including triage as well as conferences concerning Greenlandic patients with rheumatologic problems.

The various patient pathways involve doctors from all three medical specialties, nursing staff, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other cross-cutting departments/professions in close collaboration with the primary sector.

The clinic is the country’s largest rheumatology function and handles elective and subacute clarification and treatment of rheumatologic patients in the planning area South and North – both in the Capital Region.

The clinic's evaluation unit handles evaluation of citizens from the optaq area referred for rheumatic disease. In addition, evaluation of all patients from the entire RegionH with suspected Sjögren syndrome is handled in close collaboration with the Maxillofacial Department at RH.

Similarly, a fast-track clinic has been established for GCA patients for a large part of Region Hovedstaden based on NBV's recommendations, and there is an efficient arthritis clinic with rapid evaluation as a focus. The clinic has a connective tissue team that follows connective tissue patients in close collaboration with the department's highly specialized clinic at Blegdamsvej.

For patients with disc pressure or back pain, there are several different interdisciplinary pathways, as well as physiotherapist-led patient pathways.

The clinic has, in collaboration with physiotherapists, Øst Denmark's only specialized clarification of scapula alata patients, where there is also close collaboration with the Neuropathy Clinic at Blegdamsvej.

As a special feature, the treatment ambulatory in close collaboration with the Eye Clinic treats prednisolone-resistant cases of uveitis for the entire Region H and also complex GCA patients for the entire Region H.

An area of development at present is the immunotherapy-induced rheumatologic adverse effects, which we manage in close collaboration with oncologists and the use of ultrasound guidance in back rheumatology.

In terms of research as well as clinically there is a focus on RA, spondyloarthritis, uveitis, large vessel vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, gout and imaging in relation to, in addition to handling acute back problems and interdisciplinary efforts for sick-listed working-age back patients.

There is significant research connected to the clinic. Currently there are affiliated 4 professors, and a larger number of postdocs and PhD students within both medical and nursing fields.

The department is home to Danbio and Danish Rheuma Biobank and we therefore have a strong focus on implementation and ongoing development of these tools.

We also have a strong focus on training doctors with 2 training-responsible consultants, 2 UKYLs and a clearly formalized supervision function, which you will also become a part of.

The clinic has student teaching in the medical study at the University of Copenhagen across several semesters and there are 10-12 training positions increasing over the next years within rheumatology with a clinically employed clinical lecturer.

The clinic therefore offers unique opportunities to work with learning and knowledge sharing.
