About the job

For our well-functioning department we are seeking a consultant in Clinical Pathology and Anatomical Pathology with research experience and an interest in the use of AI in imaging diagnostics with diagnostic interest in the subspecialties breast and skin pathology.

We offer employment as a consultant in a department that is developing well, with engaged doctors and bioanalysts. There are good opportunities to shape and develop the specialist areas with active research and development within AI. Since Esbjerg Grindsted Hospital, Syddansk Universitetshospital, runs the medical school at both bachelor and master level, there will be opportunities for undergraduate teaching as well as contributing to the good postgraduate educational environment in the department.

The position is to be filled on 1 January 2027 or by agreement.

In the department we have 7 consultants in addition to the chief physician, as well as a varying number of training physicians, including introductory positions and main training positions.

The diagnostic functions are carried out in close collaboration with the clinical departments and good internal sparring among the employed consultants, each of whom is subspecialized within the organ areas of skin, breast, ear-nose-throat (including jaw surgery specialist specimens), gastroenterology, gynecology including cervical cytology and urology. The annual production is about 25,000 histological and 20,000 cytological specimens.

The department is characterized by professionally engaged staff and a good working environment with a high degree of social community.

Clinical Pathological Anatomy (CPA) is organizationally placed within the Clinical Diagnostic Department (CDD) and is located in Esbjerg. CDD is a laboratory building that brings together the specialties Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, Pathological Anatomy and Clinical Microbiology as well as the Infectious Hygiene unit.

We have a well-functioning laboratory, located in newly furnished, bright, friendly premises, and we have over the years renewed our equipment park, which contributes to a fast and smooth workflow with a high qualitative standard. The laboratory and support functions are staffed with a leading bioanalyst, 15 bioanalysts, three medical secretaries, a house assistant and two chapel attendants as well as a data scientist and a system administrator.

There is a common cross-disciplinary molecular diagnostic department comprising 4 molecular biologists and a bioinformatician. CDD serves Region Syddanmarks hospitals and primary care in our catchment area.

In CDD we have a set of common values and conduct rules , which form the framework for collaboration and the working culture in the department. These are anchored in our daily practice and support our common direction.

CDD is development-oriented, and has an active research department, with a coordinating research leader and a common strategy. Pathological Anatomy is involved in several research projects and there are new possibilities in connection with research in human genomics on the basis of a larger research donation to cancer research. In addition, the department is linked to BRIDGE (Brain Research – Inter Disciplinary Guided Excellence) including administration of the brain collection with associated neuropathological research.

The position is to be filled by a highly qualified consultant in Clinical Pathology and Anatomical Pathology with the right personal attributes and the ability to participate in the department's operation, research and development. Good collaboration skills are highly valued.

The Region of Southern Denmark has introduced digital pathology, which opens up good collaboration opportunities between departments across the region, and on an individual level it provides for possible agreed working-from-home days.

The region is obliged to inform you about the starting salary for the position. Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Regions and the Association of Specialists. The position involves no on-call duties.
