Freelance

What does it mean?

Freelance work is self-employment where you deliver services to clients under contracts (B2B) rather than as an employee. Common in IT, design, consulting, journalism and trades.

You invoice clients, pay business tax, VAT if turnover exceeds threshold, and arrange own pension and insurance. No automatic holiday pay, sick pay or unemployment cover unless you insure separately and join relevant a-kasse schemes.

Misclassification risk: if clients control hours, tools and integration like employees, you may legally be an employee entitled to employee rights — SKAT and unions scrutinise false freelancing (lønmodtager vs. selvstændig).

Freelancing offers flexibility and higher hourly rates but income volatility. Budget for tax instalments, slow periods and admin time.
