Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Understand what unemployment benefits are and who can receive them

Unemployment benefits (dagpenge) are an insurance-based benefit paid by your a-kasse when you lose your job. You qualify if you: (1) have been a member of an a-kasse for at least one year, (2) have worked at least 1,924 hours — roughly 12 months full-time — within the past 3 years, and (3) are actively job seeking and available to the labour market. Recent graduates may in some cases receive graduate benefits without the work requirement if they join an a-kasse within two weeks of completing their education.

  2. 2

Know the unemployment benefit rate for 2026

Unemployment benefits are up to 90% of your previous salary — but never more than the maximum rate. For 2026, the maximum rate is DKK 20,800 per month (gross). The graduate rate for recent graduates is DKK 14,560 per month (70% of the maximum rate). The rate is typically adjusted at the start of each calendar year. Part-time unemployed receive a proportional share. Benefits are paid monthly in arrears by your a-kasse and taxed as ordinary income.

  3. 3

Register as unemployed immediately — by your first day of unemployment

Register as unemployed on jobnet.dk via MitID on the day your employment ends. At the same time, contact your a-kasse and submit the necessary documents — typically a termination letter or confirmation of leaving, plus payslips from recent months. Doing this late means losing benefit days from the start. Your a-kasse will then approve your application — the first payment is typically made 2–4 weeks after approval.

  4. 4

Meet availability requirements and actively seek work

To keep your right to unemployment benefits, you must be available to the labour market. This means: (1) registering job search activities on jobnet.dk — typically at least one job per week, (2) accepting relevant work offered by the job centre or a-kasse, and (3) actively participating in activation offers. A Min Plan on jobnet.dk must be created within 3 months of unemployment. Failure to declare availability or insufficient job search can lead to a quarantine period.

  5. 5

Plan before your entitlement runs out

You are entitled to unemployment benefits for a maximum of 2 years (104 weeks) within a 3-year period. Monitor how many weeks you have used — this appears in your a-kasse app and on Mit.dk. Contact your a-kasse well before the entitlement expires, as extended benefits may be available under certain conditions. If you re-qualify by working 1,924 hours again, the period resets. The sooner you find a job, the better — also consider part-time, freelance, or wage-subsidised work as a stepping stone.

Unemployment benefits are an insurance benefit you have earned through a-kasse membership and work — they are not means-tested. Social assistance (kontanthjælp) is a means-tested public benefit for those who do not qualify for unemployment benefits, and depends on the household's total finances. Social assistance is typically lower than unemployment benefits. If you qualify for unemployment benefits, that is always preferable.

Yes — you can receive supplementary unemployment benefits if you work part-time and are still partially unemployed. The hours you work are deducted from your benefit rate. The rules for supplementary benefits are complex, but the basic principle is that you only receive benefits for the hours you do not work. Your a-kasse can advise you on the exact rules in your case.
