A complete guide for those who have become unemployed. Unemployment benefit rates for 2026, a-kasse requirements, registration on jobnet.dk, and job search advice. Get off to a good start.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Join an a-kasse — preferably before you lose your job

An a-kasse (unemployment insurance fund) is your gateway to unemployment benefits (dagpenge). To qualify, you must have been a member for at least one year and worked at least 1,924 hours (roughly one year full-time) within the past 3 years. Choose an a-kasse that matches your industry — e.g. ASE, HK, IDA, 3F, or Akademikernes. The benefit rate is the same, but services, guidance, and any trade-specific benefits vary. If you join the day after becoming unemployed, your one-year qualifying period starts over.

  2. 2

Register as unemployed on jobnet.dk by your first day of unemployment

Log in to jobnet.dk with MitID and create an unemployment registration. This must be done on the same day you become unemployed to avoid losing benefit days. Also contact your a-kasse the same day — they guide you on next steps and start processing your case. Have your termination letter or end date ready, as the a-kasse must document when your unemployment began.

  3. 3

Understand unemployment benefit rates for 2026

Unemployment benefits are max 90% of your previous salary — up to a ceiling. The maximum rate for 2026 is approx. DKK 20,800 per month (gross). If your salary was below the maximum rate, you receive 90% of your salary. Part-time unemployed and recent graduates may receive a lower rate. Benefits are paid monthly in arrears by your a-kasse. The rate is typically adjusted in January each year — always check with your a-kasse for the exact current rate.

  4. 4

Meet your availability obligations and create a job plan

As an unemployed person, you must be available to the labour market and actively seek work. Within the first 3 months, you must have a Min Plan on jobnet.dk and register your job search activities. You must apply for at least one job per week — some a-kasse organisations and job centres require more. Failure to register or insufficient job search can lead to a quarantine period and loss of benefits.

  5. 5

Take part in activation programmes from the job centre

The job centre typically contacts you within 1–3 months. Together you create an individual job plan, and you may be referred to courses, guidance, or wage-subsidised jobs. Active offers are mandatory — refusing without good reason means losing benefits for a quarantine period. Use activation offers actively: many courses and wage-subsidised jobs lead directly to regular employment.

  6. 6

Know your benefit entitlement and plan ahead

You are entitled to unemployment benefits for a maximum of 2 years (104 weeks) within 3 years. If you use the full entitlement without finding a job, you may be eligible for extended benefits — contact your a-kasse well before the entitlement expires. If you re-qualify by working 1,924 hours again, the clock resets. Monitor your benefit status in your a-kasse app or on Mit.dk. The sooner you find a new job, the better — also consider freelance, part-time, or wage-subsidised work as a stepping stone.

Frequently asked questions

The maximum unemployment benefit rate in 2026 is approx. DKK 20,800 per month (gross). You receive up to 90% of your previous salary, but never more than the maximum rate. The rate is typically adjusted each year. For the exact current rate, always check your a-kasse website or borger.dk.

You must meet three conditions: (1) Have been a member of an a-kasse for at least 1 year. (2) Have worked at least 1,924 hours (approx. 12 months full-time) within the past 3 years. (3) Be available to the labour market — i.e. actively seek work and be able to start work at short notice. Recent graduates may in some cases receive graduate benefits without meeting the work requirement.

The first payment is normally made 2–4 weeks after your a-kasse has approved your application. There is a mandatory 3-day waiting period (which you pay for yourself) at the start of your unemployment period. Register as unemployed and submit documents to your a-kasse as quickly as possible to avoid delay.

Unemployment benefits are an insurance benefit you have earned through a-kasse membership and work. They are not means-tested — your assets and your partner's income do not affect the amount. Social assistance (kontanthjælp) is a means-tested public benefit for those who do not qualify for unemployment benefits. Social assistance depends on the household's total finances and is typically lower than unemployment benefits. If you qualify for unemployment benefits, that is always the better option.
