About DKK 19,900 in 2026 if you pay no own pension, live in an average-tax municipality and are a member of the Church of Denmark. The AM contribution is DKK 2,400, municipal and church tax about DKK 4,930 and bottom tax about DKK 2,770 a month. If you pay 4% to your own pension (DKK 1,200), take-home pay falls by only about DKK 690, because the pension is deducted before tax.

Step-by-step guide
- 1
Own pension comes off first
If you have an occupational pension, your own share (typically 3–5% of salary) is deducted before anything else. It is tax-free now and taxed only when you receive it as a pensioner. So your net salary is lower with a pension, but you also pay less tax today. The employer’s share comes on top of your salary and does not affect your take-home pay.
- 2
AM contribution: 8% of the rest
The labour market contribution (AM-bidrag) is 8% of your salary after own pension. It is deducted before tax and without any allowance. From 2026 you only pay it from the year you turn 18. What remains is your personal income — the basis for bottom tax and middle tax.
- 3
Deductions: personal allowance, employment deduction and job deduction
The first DKK 54,100 a year are tax-free (the personal allowance in 2026). As an employee you automatically get an employment deduction of 12.75% of your salary, max DKK 63,300, and a job deduction of 4.5% of salary above DKK 235,200, max DKK 3,100. The employment and job deductions only reduce municipal and church tax, not bottom tax.
- 4
Municipal and church tax
Municipal tax is the largest item. It averages 25.05% in 2026, but the rate depends on the municipality you live in on 1 January — find yours on skm.dk. If you are a member of the Church of Denmark, you also pay church tax, about 0.87% on average. Both are calculated on your taxable income — personal income minus employment and job deductions — above the personal allowance.
- 5
Bottom tax, middle tax and top tax
Bottom tax is 12.01% of your personal income above the personal allowance. From 2026 the old top tax is split into three: middle tax 7.5% above DKK 641,200, top tax 7.5% above DKK 777,900 and top-top tax 5% above DKK 2,592,700 — all after AM contribution. The 44.57% tax ceiling means middle tax is slightly lower if you live in a high-tax municipality.
- 6
How it looks on your tax card and payslip
Your employer does not use this calculation directly but your tax card: a monthly allowance and a withholding rate. The allowance is the personal allowance plus employment and job deductions divided by 12; the withholding rate is municipal and church tax plus bottom tax. Middle and top tax are also built into the withholding rate when the Tax Agency expects you to pay them. If your preliminary income assessment is wrong, the result will be off — correct it on skat.dk with MitID.

Frequently asked questions
About DKK 25,940 in 2026 with no own pension, average municipal tax and church tax. From DKK 35,000 you take home about DKK 22,920, from DKK 50,000 about DKK 31,700. You only pay middle tax once your salary exceeds about DKK 58,080 a month.
For most employees, 31–42% of the gross salary goes to AM contribution and tax, so you keep 58–69%. The higher the salary, the smaller the share you keep, because the personal allowance matters less and middle and top tax kick in. Your own pension reduces take-home pay further but is tax-free until you retire.
When your personal income after AM contribution exceeds DKK 641,200 a year in 2026. Without own pension that equals a gross salary of about DKK 58,080 a month (about DKK 697,000 a year). If you pay into a pension, the threshold is higher because the pension is deducted first. Middle tax is 7.5% of the amount above the threshold — not of your whole salary.
Choose "Hourly wage" in the calculator and enter your hourly wage and hours per week. It converts to a monthly salary (hourly wage × hours × 52 / 12) and deducts AM contribution and tax the same way. DKK 150 an hour for 15 hours a week gives about DKK 9,750 gross and about DKK 7,600 take-home a month. Holiday pay (12.5% for hourly paid staff) is not included.
From 2026 you pay no AM contribution until the year you turn 18. The personal allowance is DKK 54,100 — the same as for adults — so if you earn less than about DKK 4,500 a month all year, you usually pay no tax. You need a tax card; without one your employer withholds 55%. Read more in the guide on part-time jobs for teenagers.
Your payslip uses the tax card from your preliminary income assessment. Differences are usually due to other deductions (commuting, interest, union fees), a different municipal tax, ATP (up to DKK 99 a month), fringe benefits or not having the same salary all year. The calculator shows the full year’s tax spread evenly over 12 months.
