About the job

At the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, a position as a bioanalyst/laborant is available to be filled as of January 1, 2027 or by agreement. The position is a permanent appointment and is scheduled for 37 hours/week.

Sequencing of microorganisms is rapidly developing. Do you want to help bring the quality of our sequencing analyses to the top and help further develop our methods and analysis areas? Then this position may be for you.

At the Department of Clinical Microbiology we perform microbiological diagnostics and provide guidance within bacteriology, virology, serology, parasitology and mycology for Herlev, Gentofte, Hillerød, Helsingør and Frederikssund Hospitals as well as the primary health service within the catchment area in the Capital Region of Denmark (from 2027 Region ØST). The department is responsible for infection prevention guidance and also produces bacteriological substrates and transport media.

The department has about 150 staff and an annual total number of samples just under one million, making it one of the largest microbiological departments in Denmark. We have recently achieved accreditation to the ISO 15189 standard - quality assurance is therefore a natural and integrated part of our daily work.

In the position, the default is on-site on weekdays, but evening and weekend shift work may occur.

We offer influence in an inspiring and developing multidisciplinary collaboration with doctors, bioanalysts, lab technicians, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, secretaries, infection control nurses and other professional groups.

In our department we value a good working environment, which is expressed through mutual trust and respect, good communication and respectful handling of the job.

”The good tone” is highly valued in the department.

In our department, competence development, in relation to professional and personal development, is embedded in the department's culture, and as a department we continuously work to develop ourselves according to the needs of the customers and society.

In our department we work with ”My Career Path”, which helps to make your possibilities visible, but also anchors your wishes and goals within the department's values and objectives.

KMA is a modern workplace where we make use of the latest technological equipment in the laboratories, which supports high-quality analytical results and helps create a good working environment.

Main tasks

Your tasks will be related to the sequencing laboratory, where we perform sequencing analyses for the identification and typing of different microorganisms.

The analyses include all steps from sample receipt to setup on the sequencing machine, including sample preparation, DNA/RNA purification, library preparation and setup on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms. Parts of the process are performed with the aid of pipetting robots, and work is being done to increase automation of current and future analyses

You will become a resource person for the area. This means that in addition to your routine duties you will also have to organize work areas, document and quality assure the analyses. In addition you will have to handle troubleshooting, development and project tasks in close cooperation with our molecular biologists and bioinformaticians. As part of your key role you will also have to train other staff in the workflows.

Qualifications

We expect that you

  • have Danish authorization as a bioanalyst or be a trained laboratory technician.
  • have experience with molecular biology and preferably microbiology.
  • have experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • are comfortable with IT and eager to learn new software.
  • work in a structured and quality-conscious manner and thrive with laboratory routines.
  • are engaged, flexible and professionally proficient.
  • both have good collaboration skills and can work independently on your tasks.

It is an advantage if you have

  • experience with Illumina platforms, e.g. MiSeq
  • experience with Oxford Nanopore Technologies, e.g. MinION or GridION
  • experience with DNA extraction and library preparation
  • experience with pipetting robots for setting up PCR or NGS workflows
  • experience with troubleshooting and optimization of molecular biological or sequencing-based analyses.

The position is organizationally placed at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Herlev Hospital and reports to an overbioanalyst for the area.

Salary and employment terms follow the collective agreement for staff in the Health Cartel area, concluded between the Health Cartel's parties, including Danish Bioanalysts and the Regions’ Salary and Tariff Board.
