About the job

We are seeking a child and youth advisor who wants to help create a positive change for children with disabilities and their families.

About the department

In the team for disability compensating services (HKY) we process applications and follow-ups under the Child Act §§ 86-90, which entail compensable benefits (formerly supplementary disability costs allowance), lost earning capacity, supplementary benefits, accompaniment, personal care and practical assistance, as well as respite at home and/or respite outside the home. We also handle complaints and referrals from the National Appeals Board.

The team is newly established, and consists of a team of 10 child and youth advisors, a social work coordinator, a department head and an authority head.

In the HKY team we have both colleagues with many years of experience and new hires. We share a culture of consulting with each other and lifting professionally together on the core task.

We are in an organization undergoing change. In addition to sparring with your closest colleagues, you should be prepared for learning and collaboration with other colleagues in the unit about interfaces in the task and support for children and families.

The HKY team is part of an authority department with about 40 employees.

About the disability compensating benefits

The target group for disability compensating benefits for children is children and young people under 18 years with a significant and lasting physical or mental impairment or an intrusive, chronic or long-term illness.

The work with disability compensating benefits consists of obtaining information, child involvement, parental involvement, calculation of the benefit and preparation of decisions.

The work is primarily administrative, but you can also expect meetings, both in person and by phone, with the parents and involving conversations with the children.

As a child and youth advisor you will cooperate with other child and youth advisors in the house who solve other tasks in the child/young person’s case. We are in the process of implementing workflows for how we best collaborate in the cases to benefit the citizens. You should be prepared to become part of this process.

Part of the work also consists of guiding. This can be guidance to parents, to collaborators or to colleagues in the house.

Tasks as a child and youth advisor in the HKY team

  • obtain information from parents and partners, including contacting the families either by telephone, in person meetings or via digital mail
  • provide the child/young person’s perspective via inclusive conversations, child letters or otherwise
  • advise parents of children and young people with long-term physical or mental disabilities about the compensating benefits
  • participate in the team’s on-call arrangement regarding ad hoc tasks
  • guide colleagues in the house and partners about the compensating benefits
  • collaborate with colleagues in the house about how we best provide holistic support to families
  • ensure the case is sufficiently well documented so you can make decisions in both applications and follow-up cases
  • handle complaints about decisions on the compensating benefits

The role as a child and youth advisor in the authority area

In the child and youth area we are in contact with children, youths and their families every day who need our professional knowledge and efforts to create positive changes in the families’ lives. To solve this task, we need many different competencies, both professional and personal.

We strive to be clear in our communication about what will happen and what the options are. We involve the child and the families and communicate clearly so they feel seen and heard.

You will use your social work background, but also your ability to meet the specific family and the individual child and to accommodate the situation they are in. When families with children and young people with a disability come to us, they are often in grief or crisis, and there is a great need for empathy, situational awareness and openness in the meeting. We meet the child and the families with professional curiosity about what we can offer, and we proactively think in terms of solutions and possibilities.

We place emphasis on professional sparring in daily life and on openly discussing if we are in doubt, or need others’ perspectives on a case.

We expect that you

  • are educated as social worker, social mediator or have another relevant background
  • have experience with, or are curious about, working with citizens in vulnerable positions or with disabilities and can meet citizens as equals and with respect
  • can work in a structured and responsible manner, as we deal with deadlines for decisions and legal requirements
  • know or are able to understand relevant legislation and can convey legal decisions in a comprehensible language based on a well-founded basis
  • can communicate clearly both in writing and speaking
  • have a flair for IT systems or experience with the professional system DUBU
  • can work independently, but also engage constructively in partnerships with other child and youth advisors in the house.

We can offer

  • a workplace where the core task is in focus
  • a workplace where wellbeing is in focus
  • an working environment driven by engaged staff and committed leadership
  • a department with high professional expertise
  • thorough introduction and training in workflows and systems
  • possibility for remote work
  • flexible working hours
  • fruit, massage and canteen scheme
  • staff association that arranges social and cultural events.

Employment terms

The position has a 37-hour work week, and it will be filled on December 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary and employment terms follow the principles of Ny Løn in accordance with the agreement for social workers, social mediators, HK collective agreement for administration and IT.

In connection with the recruitment we obtain extended criminal record and child background checks as well as references.
