About the job
A position as Chief Bioanalyst at the Capital Region of Denmark, Rigshospitalet's Diagnostic Center, Department of Pathology, is available for filling as of 1 February 2027.
You will become part of a strong community, where we together with our colleagues across the healthcare sector take responsibility that all patients have access to the best possible diagnostics and treatment. You should have the desire and courage to work with our vision of being to the benefit of the individual patient and the entire health system.
Department's responsibilities and tasks
The Department of Pathology at Rigshospitalet is a highly specialized department for Denmark with diagnostics, education, research and innovation at a high international level. Currently the department handles main functions, regional functions and highly specialized functions, but as part of the Health Reform work, the department will over time move toward a smaller, tighter and deeper profile.
This means a focus on phasing out tests with little value for the patient, the possibility of relocating main function tasks must be explored, and the department should work to strengthen the chain of responsibility in the Region of East Denmark and across the country as well as strengthen collaboration with international partners.
The Department of Pathology has diagnostic responsibility for about 400 patients daily, and we receive patient samples from more than 700 different requisitioning entities in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands from hospital departments and from specialist and dental practices. The patient samples annually materialize into about 100,000 requisitions, about 300,000 tissue and cell blocks and about 800,000 slides.
The department works digitally with the histological test portfolio and has ambitions to also digitalize the cytological portfolio and explore possibilities to use AI.
The laboratory has undergone a major reorganization aimed at creating a more robust and optimized sample flow and to support employees' ability to work more freely. In addition, work is currently underway to map analyses and platforms to create a more robust and sustainable molecular diagnostic community – MDxCore – in the Diagnostic Center.
We have a culture characterized by high professional quality and willingness to develop. We constantly strive to push a little further to find new solutions that can support even better patient pathways. The laboratory plays a central role in the department's professional development.
We want to be a workplace where high professionalism and professionalism go hand in hand with good collegiality and a culture where we continuously develop, learn new things and teach others. We collaborate across all professional disciplines, and we focus on both pre- and postgraduate education as well as research and innovation, and we collaborate with both the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University Hospital and the Copenhagen University College of Education.
The Chief Bioanalyst forms together with the Chief Physician the department leadership. The department comprises about 200 employees distributed across about 100 bioanalysts and laboratory staff, 45 specialists, 3 professors and 18–20 resident physicians, 2 autopsy technicians and a team of clinical academics, including chemists, biochemists and molecular biologists, as well as an IT and secretarial function and a number of staff functions that support work with quality and accreditation as well as teaching of bioanalyst students.
The leadership team is cross-disciplinary and consists of 5 head bioanalysts and 1 leading molecular biologist with responsibility for each of their laboratory areas, 1 IT and secretarial leader, 1 head bioanalyst with responsibility for a number of cross-cutting leadership projects, and 2 operations-responsible senior physicians and 1 research-responsible senior physician.
As Chief Bioanalyst you, together with the Chief Physician, are responsible for
- ensuring that Rigshospitalet's visions and missions are implemented and contribute to future objectives in the specialty
- managing the managerial and overall administrative operation of the department, including financial management and budget adherence
- ensuring success with cross-cutting leadership tasks across the Diagnostics Center
- supporting and developing the department's good collaboration and dialogue nationally and internationally
- ensuring progress in the department's research and innovation activities
- ensuring that personnel management, education and development are conducted with a view to a good working environment
With the Health Reform, there is a political clear ambition that as many tasks and functions as possible should be located in the close health services. This sharpens Rigshospitalet's profile as a tertiary and quaternary hospital and places high demands on our ability to support the coherence between the broadly specialized functions close to the patient and the narrowly specialized functions located in the large cities.
Within the framework set by politicians, you are expected to contribute to anchoring the transformation process that the hospital's vision has laid out in the operation of the Department of Pathology. We strive to create a cultural, clinical and technological paradigm shift, where we collaborate across specialties and geographies to utilize our resources as effectively as possible. The goal is to maximize benefit for both the patients who are assessed and treated at Rigshospitalet and for patients who in the future will meet a robust and sustainable local health service.
Competencies
The position is intended for a health professional with good knowledge of the laboratory area, with the willingness and ability to enter into a close and binding leadership partnership with the Chief Physician. Emphasis will be placed on the candidate's leadership experience and mastery of leading through others and working with liberating.
It is highly valued that the candidate has experience with research, innovation and education and has a strong interest in further developing a culture built on close interdisciplinary collaboration, curiosity, integrity and professionalism. It is expected that the candidate will participate in a cross-disciplinary managerial collaboration with the department's leadership group.
