About the job

A position as Chief Bioanalyst at the Capital Region of Denmark, Rigshospitalet’s Diagnostic Center, Department of Pathology is available for occupancy as of February 1, 2027.

You will become part of a strong community, where we, together with our colleagues across the health service, take responsibility for ensuring that all patients have access to the best possible diagnostics and treatment. You should have the desire and courage to work with our vision of being of benefit to the individual patient and the overall health service.

Department's responsibilities and tasks

The Department of Pathology at Rigshospitalet is a highly specialized department for the entire Denmark with diagnostics, education, research and innovation at a high international level. Currently the department handles main functions, regional functions and highly specialized functions, but as part of the work with the Health Reform the department will over time move towards a smaller, narrower and deeper profile.

This means there is focus on phasing out investigations with little value for the patient, the possibility of relocating main function tasks should be explored, and the department should work to strengthen the chain of responsibility in the Region of East Denmark and across the country as well as strengthen collaboration with international partners.

The Department of Pathology has the diagnostic responsibility for about 400 patients every day, and we receive patient samples from more than 700 different requisitioners in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands from hospital departments and from specialist and dental practices. The patient samples are processed annually into about 100,000 requisitions, about 300,000 tissue and cell blocks and about 800,000 slides.

The department works digitally with the histological sample portfolio and has ambitions to also digitize the cytological portfolio as well as explore possibilities to use AI.

The laboratory has undergone a major reorganization aimed at creating a more robust and optimized sample flow and to support employees’ ability to work more flexibly. In addition, work is currently underway to map analyses and platforms with a view to creating a more robust and sustainable molecular diagnostic community – MDxCore – in the Diagnostic Center.

We have a culture characterized by high professional quality and willingness to develop. We constantly try to stretch a little further to find new solutions that can support even better patient pathways. The laboratory plays a central role in the department’s professional development.

We want to be a workplace where high professionalism and professionalism go hand in hand with good collegiality and a culture where we continuously develop, learn new things and teach others. We collaborate across all disciplines, and we focus on both pre- and post-graduate education as well as research and innovation, and we collaborate with Copenhagen University, the Technical University Hospital and Copenhagen University College of Education.

The Chief Bioanalyst, together with the Chief Physician, forms the department management. The department comprises about 200 staff distributed among about 100 bioanalysts and laboratory assistants, 45 specialists, 3 professors and 18–20 clinical fellows, 2 autopsy technicians and a team of clinical academics, including chemists, biochemists and molecular biologists, as well as an IT and secretarial function and a number of staff functions that support quality and accreditation work as well as the education of bioanalyst students.

The leadership team is interdisciplinary and consists of 5 senior bioanalysts and 1 leading molecular biologist with responsibility for each of their laboratory areas, 1 IT and secretarial manager, 1 senior bioanalyst responsible for a number of cross-cutting leadership projects, and 2 operating-chief physicians and 1 research-responsible chief physician.

As Chief Bioanalyst you, together with the Chief Physician, are responsible for

  • ensuring that Rigshospitalet’s visions and missions are followed and contribute to future targets in the specialty
  • carrying the management and overall administrative operation of the department, including financial management and budget compliance
  • that we succeed with cross-cutting leadership tasks across the Diagnostic Center
  • supporting and developing the department’s good collaboration and dialogue nationally and internationally
  • ensuring progress in the department’s research and innovation activities
  • ensuring that personnel management, education and development take place with a view to a good working environment

With the Health Reform, there is a political clearly stated ambition that as many tasks and functions as possible should be located in the near healthcare system. This sharpens Rigshospitalet’s profile as a tertiary and quaternary hospital and places high demands on our ability to support the coherence between the broadly specialized functions close to the patient and the narrowly specialized functions located in the large cities.

Within the framework set by the politicians, you must contribute to anchoring the transformation process that the hospital’s vision has laid out in the operations of the Department of Pathology. We work to create a cultural, clinical and technological paradigm shift, where we collaborate across specialties and geographies to make the best use of our resources. The goal is to create the greatest possible benefit for both the patients who are assessed and treated at Rigshospitalet, and for patients who in the future will be met by a robust and sustainable local health service.

Competencies

The position is intended for a health professional profile who has good knowledge of the laboratory field with the desire and ability to engage in a close and committed leadership partnership with the Chief Physician. Emphasis will be placed on the applicant having leadership experience and mastery of the art of leading through others and working with delegation.

It is strongly valued that the applicant has experience with research, innovation and education and has a strong interest in further developing a culture built on a strong cross-disciplinary collaboration, curiosity, integrity and professionalism. It is expected that the applicant will participate in a cross-disciplinary leadership collaboration with the department’s leadership team.

In addition, emphasis will be placed on the applicant

  • Having recognized collaborative abilities with regard to building trust across the department. In collaboration with the other leaders and staff, the applicant should be able to implement a transparent leadership style with the ability to generate professional enthusiasm and engagement
  • Having the ability to lead both horizontally and vertically and engage in dialogue with partners
  • Having good communication skills, ability to engage in dialogue and create clear direction
  • Being professionally sharp and forward-looking on behalf of the department
  • Having a view of the hospital and Diagnostic Center as a whole
  • Having ambitions for the development of pathology and being able to contribute to the development of the laboratory in line with new technologies and patient pathways
  • Being able to lead and create the framework for research and innovation activities both in the department, across disciplines and for the hospital as a whole in collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Being able to delegate and involve leaders and staff

  • Having leadership experience with organizational and professional change processes
