Engineering Manager

Systemate develops business-critical software for the energy and utility sector — including invoicing, market communication and settlement. It is critical software that is used every day, where quality, stability and the technical choices have real significance.

We have developers spread across five domain teams with experienced colleagues who have deep domain knowledge and responsibility for their own areas.

We are looking for someone who can take responsibility for the whole development organization: the people, the skills, the capacity and the way we work — while technical ownership and decisions remain close to those who know the problems best.

What you will do

You will have the people management responsibility for our developers and become a central part of the daily management of the development organization. A large part of your task will be to create the framework for talented people to succeed and develop. But the role does not stop at people management.

You will also help us become better at understanding our own capacity, detecting risks earlier and learning from the times when plan and reality do not match.

When something does not go as expected, we want to know why.

• Was the task not understood well enough?
• Did we miss a skill?
• Did technical debt become a barrier?

The goal is not to assign blame. The goal is to learn enough to do better next time. You will not manage the projects. That is done by our project managers and product organization, but you will become a close partner when plans, capacity and reality have to align.

You must be technically strong — without having to decide everything

You will become a technical sparring partner in architecture and solution discussions. You must be technically strong enough to assess arguments, ask the hard questions and understand the consequences of a choice. But you also need to be comfortable with the decision often resting with others.

We believe in distributed ownership. Responsibility for code, domains and technical decisions should lie close to the people who work with the area. Part of your task is therefore not to take more responsibility yourself, but to help more people be able to take it.

The developer role is changing

AI is changing software development. For us, this is not a future scenario. It is already happening. We have established an AI policy, a Best Practice for AI and a maturity model, and we are actively working with AI-supported development. But the interesting change is not only about tools. The developer role itself is shifting. The value increasingly lies in being able to understand the problem, analyze the context, specify the solution, manage the AI work and verify the result — not just writing the code yourself.

You will play a central role in this transformation. It requires both direction and curiosity. We do not believe in rolling out a new model and then hoping the organization follows. The change must happen together with the people who will work in it.

Who we are looking for

You have previously held people management responsibility in a software development environment and thrive at the intersection of people, technology and organization.

• you have experience with people management of developers
• you have a strong technical understanding and can challenge professional arguments without needing to own the decision
• you can create clarity about responsibility, expectations and priorities
• you can drive a larger developer organization with several teams on the same product and lay the foundation for our processes to work well together
• you maintain quality even when delivery pressure is on
• you have experience getting responsibility and ownership to spread more broadly in an organization
• you take time to understand people, systems and the organization before changing them
• you are motivated by both people, technology and continuous improvements
• you have worked with AI-supported software development and understand how AI changes the workflow from analysis and specification to implementation, testing and review — and be able to assess whether we actually become better by the way we use the tools.
