About the job

Would you like to work in a strong legal environment within an area that is also the subject of great political interest and media attention, and where there is focus on international human rights and the current situation in countries around the world?

The Secretariat of the Refugee Board is looking for new colleagues who want to build a solid foundation for their future career.

Your new workplace

The Refugee Board is an independent, court-like body under the Ministry of Immigration and Integration.

The Board handles appeals against asylum-related decisions made in the first instance by the Danish Immigration Service. The Board's decisions are final and cannot be brought before the courts.

The Secretariat's main task is to provide legal and practical assistance to the Refugee Board's leadership, the Board's coordinating committee and the Board's other members.

With us you will receive thorough training in case handling and legal tasks, while gaining deep insight into the countries from which asylum seekers originate. You will obtain a unique understanding of the court-like process and will collaborate closely with lawyers, judges and partners such as the Danish Immigration Service, the Return Migration Service, the Danish Refugee Council, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We prepare you to handle complex cases and also to take on general departmental tasks.

Your tasks

You will join a close collaboration with the office management, other attorneys and Refugee Board members, where your primary tasks will be legal case handling in both Danish and international contexts.

In addition, your tasks will include

  • preparation of cases for board consideration, and participation in the board meetings themselves
  • handling appeals against decisions by the Danish Immigration Service
  • preparation of contributions in response to inquiries on proposed legislation, questions in the Folketing, press inquiries, and inquiries from authorities in other countries
  • preparation of general legal notes related to the asylum area
  • responding to inquiries from other authorities
  • preparation of drafts for the Board's reports
  • preparing contributions to government process papers in international cases against Denmark
  • carrying out fixed general legal and administrative tasks across the office

You will also have responsibility for collecting information about some of the countries from which Denmark receives asylum seekers. You will be involved in special issues, and you will continuously ensure that the board, in connection with case processing of asylum seekers, has the latest relevant information.

About you

You have a relevant academic background, e.g., cand.jur. You may be a recent graduate or in your final semester of your master's, but you are also welcome to apply if you have experience from the field of migration or other areas. It is not a requirement that you have knowledge of asylum law. We provide thorough training, during which you will, among other things, be assigned a fixed mentor during the first three months.

You will become part of a legal environment where you will be professionally and personally challenged, and where we expect you to be:

  • professionally strong, hardworking and flexible
  • interested in both Danish and international societal and legal conditions with an understanding of cultural differences
  • well-formulated in writing and orally in both Danish and English – and preferably other languages
  • outgoing, cooperative and good at communicating
  • independent and responsible

We offer you

With us you become part of a workplace where high professionalism and efficiency are central, while there is also room for a good working environment and strong collegial cohesion.

You will join about 45 engaged colleagues with various educational backgrounds, the majority being lawyers. We are a young and dynamic team with a varied daily life, where the tone is informal and doors are always open. You get good opportunities to spar and collaborate with your colleagues in an environment that prioritises knowledge sharing and the quality of our work.

In the Secretariat we also place great emphasis on social community, and we organise activities outside working hours, including spontaneous Friday bars as well as running or book clubs.

The Refugee Board's Secretariat is located at Adelgade 11-13, 1304 Copenhagen K, about 500 metres from Kongens Nytorv Metro Station .

There will be a written test in connection with the interview, where we test your written Danish language skills. The test lasts about fifteen minutes and must be completed without any aids.

Salary and employment terms

You will be employed as an assistant attorney under the State Academic Professionals Agreement (AC). There is an opportunity to negotiate a supplement that matches your qualifications.

The employment area is the Ministry of Immigration and Integration and its associated institutions, and the workplace is the Refugee Board Secretariat, Adelgade 11-13, 1304 Copenhagen K.
