About the job

We are seeking as of March 1, 2027 or by agreement a specialist physician who, with their strong professional expertise, can help drive and develop one of the forensic-psychiatric 24-hour wards. With us you get a diverse and exciting daily life with the possibility to provide thorough and holistic treatment to patients with complex disease courses. There is a vacant specialist physician position on several of the department's forensic-psychiatric 24-hour wards, and there is therefore room to match based on individual wishes.

About the Psychiatric Department Middelfart

The Psychiatric Department Middelfart undertakes the general psychiatric tasks in Middelfart and the Municipality of Assens with a population base of about 80,000 inhabitants, as well as the forensic-psychiatric function, which covers the entire Region of Southern Denmark. In addition, the Forensic Psychiatry in Middelfart carries out mental examinations in the Region of Southern Denmark and examinations and treatment of sexually disordered offenders, the latter as part of a national network with joint meetings and supervision.

The department has 102 inpatient beds, of which 84 are forensic-psychiatric. There is also local psychiatry and a forensic-psychiatric district function. The department is staffed with 16 consultant positions and 8 specialist physician positions. We have excellent and well-functioning physical facilities with 6 forensic-psychiatric wards and 1 integrated general psychiatric ward.

The forensic-psychiatric inpatient wards are distributed across 4 24-hour units with acute admission function, 1 rehabilitation unit and 1 unit for custodial patients. Admission of forensic-psychiatric inpatients throughout the Region of Southern Denmark is handled by the forensic-psychiatric specialists in Middelfart.

About the forensic-psychiatric 24-hour ward

The ward is an integrated unit with acute admission function, with 14 beds distributed across both open and closed units in order to ensure continuity during admission. The target group is patients sentenced to treatment or to placement orders. The ward has a nursing standard of 35 (nurses, social and health care assistants and pedagogues). The ward has a permanent senior physician, and there is also attached a social worker, psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist and a medical secretary.

Your tasks

You will be permanently attached to one forensic-psychiatric ward as a specialist physician with the examination and treatment of admitted or placed forensic-psychiatric patients as your main task. The majority of patients suffer from schizophrenia, but other diagnoses regularly occur, and many patients’ courses of illness are particularly complex. The ward collaborates with the forensic-psychiatric outpatient treaters who manage the treatment-sentenced patients’ pathways after discharge.

In addition to work in the inpatient ward, you will regularly need to draft forensic-psychiatric mental opinions and participate in on-call duties, where the task involves assessing general psychiatric patients for admission to your own department as well as forensic-psychiatric patients for admission across the entire region. The on-call duty can be performed from your own home in the evening and night hours.

Since the department has an education function for specialist doctors in psychiatry and general medicine, you will become part of a strong medical professional community with a focus on education and teaching.

It is important to us that you are well prepared to perform your function. Therefore we support you with, among other things:

  • a tailored intro program and a mentor
  • supervision - including mental opinions and treatment of sexually disordered offenders
  • good course opportunities as well as internal theme days
  • opportunity to participate in the forensic-psychiatric expert training
  • good opportunity for sparring with colleagues in everyday work
  • good interdisciplinary collaboration with, for example, psychologists

Qualifications

You must have a broad general psychiatric education and specialist physician recognition in psychiatry. Start date can be adjusted if you are on the way to obtaining specialist recognition.

Forensic-psychiatric experience is an advantage but not mandatory, as you will, through your work, have good prerequisites to develop your competencies within, among other things, psychoses, psychopharmacology, dual diagnoses, differential diagnosis, written communication and law. We especially emphasize your willingness and ability to collaborate and join a cross-disciplinary team.

Salary and employment terms

Salary and employment terms for the position follow the Underordnede læger - overenskomst 33.06.1 The starting salary for the position can be found via the following link: See starting salary for positions in Region of Southern Denmark .

The department hires only employees with a satisfactory criminal record. We require applying for an official criminal record (10 years back) with consent from the person being employed.
