About the job

Are you interested in psychiatric nursing, complex patient pathways and a workplace where professionalism, reflection and development are a natural part of everyday life?

Then it may be you we are looking for in Ward 4 in the Department of Depression and Anxiety at Aarhus University Hospital.

At Ward 4 we have capacity for 27 patients and work primarily with people with affective disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. We also treat patients with, among other things, schizoaffective disorder and dementia.

Many of our patients also have somatic diseases and issues that require observation, nursing and treatment during hospitalization. As a nurse on Ward 4 you therefore work with both psychiatric and somatic nursing – and not least with the interaction between the two.

That provides a varied and professionally challenging daily life, where you need both your clinical eye, your relational professional skills and your ability to see the whole patient.

Nursing is a central part of the treatment

At Ward 4 we have expectations of our nurses – and we make room for the nursing expertise to be used.

You should have the desire to observe, assess, reflect and act, and to actively bring your professional perspectives into the overall treatment.

As a nurse you are close to the patient throughout the hospitalization and have an important role in creating coherence in the treatment course. This could for example be observation and assessment of a patient with increasing mania, changes in a severe depression, suicide risk, effect and side effects of medical treatment or concurrent somatic problems.

What will you work with?

As a nurse at Ward 4 you will have an independent and central role in the patient’s treatment and care.

You will among other things

  • perform systematic observations and clinical assessments of the patient’s psychological and somatic condition
  • be the point of contact and contribute to structure and continuity in the patient pathway
  • work with nursing-therapeutic assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation
  • assess and prevent, among other things, suicide risk, aggression and conflicts
  • administer medications and observe effects and side effects
  • work environment-therapeutically and relation-oriented with reference to the patient’s condition and treatment goals
  • undertake and coordinate somatic nursing as part of the overall patient pathway
  • involve patients and relatives
  • actively contribute with nursing professional assessments in the interdisciplinary collaboration.

We want nurses who not only implement a plan but who help qualify it.

Professional development is part of everyday life

When you start at Ward 4, you become part of our own onboarding program. Here you get a structured introduction to the ward, the patient group, the treatment and our professional tools, so you gradually become familiar with the tasks.

As a new employee you participate in both the general supervision on Ward 4 and in separate supervision for new employees. Here we work with concrete patient pathways, clinical assessments and professional issues from everyday life.

Teaching is also a regular part of our professional work. We teach, among other things, psychopathology and focus on linking knowledge about mental and somatic illness to observation, clinical assessment, nursing and treatment.

There is also the possibility to obtain special professional responsibilities and areas of interest. We also prioritize further education and, as a general rule, have the possibility to send one nurse per year on the specialist training in psychiatric nursing.

We would like to be a ward where you can continue to develop – both as a newcomer to psychiatry and when you have many years of experience.

We work across professions – and we do it together

At Ward 4, nurses, social and healthcare assistants, doctors, psychologists, pedagogues, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, social workers, peer-support workers and secretaries work together in the patients’ treatment.

We expect you to bring your nursing knowledge into the collaboration and at the same time be curious about the perspectives of the other professional groups.

We help each other and stand together in complex situations. There must be room for professional discussions and different perspectives – and at the same time for humor, diversity and a good collegial community.

Who are you?

You are a nurse and want to work with people with mental illness.

You may already have experience from psychiatry. Perhaps you come from somatics, or perhaps you are newly graduated and curious about psychiatric nursing. All three starting points can be relevant for us.

We particularly emphasise that you

  • are professionally curious and want to develop
  • work systematically and reflectively with nursing
  • have an eye for both mental and somatic problems
  • can establish professional relationships with people in difficult and complex situations
  • take responsibility and can maintain an overview when a situation changes
  • bring your professional knowledge actively into the interdisciplinary collaboration
  • contribute to a culture where we share knowledge and make each other better.

You do not need to know everything from day one. The most important thing is that you want to learn, take responsibility and be an active part of the professional development at Ward 4.

Perhaps it is you we are missing?

If you would like to work somewhere where the relationship to the patient is decisive, and where relational nursing goes hand in hand with professional reflection and clinical assessment, we would like to hear from you.

Please tell us what academically engages you and why you want to work with psychiatric nursing.
