About the job

Are you a nurse with somatic experience, and would you as a maternity leave substitute help ensure a longer and better life for patients with mental illness? Do you want to take on the responsibility of independently conducting somatic disease surveillance for patients in the psychiatric outpatient clinics?

Would you like to be in a non-rotating position and almost determine when you take your vacation?

Does that sound like something for you? Then read on!

A regional somatic initiative with two integrated tracks

In 2021, the Capital Region of Denmark's Psychiatry established a Unit for Somatic Disease Surveillance – as part of the solution to the well-documented somatic excess mortality among psychiatric patients. Our task is to improve the detection of somatic disease among patients in psychiatric outpatient clinics, and support the initiation of treatment with the general practitioner.

The initiative is now fully rolled out at all of the region's general psychiatric outpatient clinics and covers 19 physical locations. Indsatsen består af to integrerede spor

  • A nurse track. The somatic nurse screens for COPD, asthma, cardiovascular risk and possible abdominal disease in patients with affective disorders and psychotic disorders – primarily in connection with initiation in the outpatient clinic.
  • A physician track. A specialist in general medicine performs a more in-depth somatic assessment in selected patients, where the nurse finds signs of possible disease lying outside the nurse's screening areas.

In both tracks the patient is initially seen for one consultation. From both the nurse track and the physician track, notes are sent to the patient's own GP and we book the first appointment with the patient's own GP. The outpatient clinic is tasked with motivating, booking and following up with the patients.

The unit consists of a medical unit chief, a chief physician, a project manager, 7 nurses, 4 general practitioner consultants and a secretary.

We are now seeking a maternity leave substitute, as one of the unit's nurses will go on maternity leave.

Which outpatient clinics will you be at?

  • During a 12-week training period you will have work days at a number of psychiatric outpatient clinics in Greater Copenhagen.
  • When the training is completed, you will be responsible for your own outpatient clinics at Frederiksberg and Amager.

Your daily work and your areas of responsibility

You must independently handle somatic screening of patients in the psychiatric outpatient clinics and support the transition to further treatment in general practice.

You will undergo a 12-week training course, where you will receive thorough training and in-depth knowledge of somatic disease surveillance. When you are ready, you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Screening and assessment : Through a single consultation, screen and independently assess patients regarding COPD, asthma, cardiovascular risk and possible abdominal disease. You see about six patients a day.
  • Transition to their own GP : Assess whether the patient should be referred to their own GP, send a note, and book an appointment on behalf of the patient.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration : Assess the need for further somatic examination before referral to the patient’s own GP and onward referral to the unit’s GP consultants
  • Data collection : Contribute to documenting the initiative through data collection from each consultation.

We are looking for someone who

  • is a trained nurse with solid somatic experience.
  • is experienced in using the Sundhedsplatformen.
  • has good communication skills and can work independently while closely collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • is open-minded and can meet psychiatric patients, who often have difficulty articulating their symptoms.
  • is good at acquiring new knowledge and translating it into practical application in work with patients.

Three good reasons to apply for the job

  • Independent responsibility. You will take on the responsibility for independently carrying out somatic disease surveillance and assess what should happen with the patient's findings.
  • Education and professional development. You will have a 12-week training program with thorough teaching and ongoing supervision.
  • A central role. You will play a key role in bridging the gap between psychiatric and somatic health care and support that patients receive the necessary follow-up and treatment.

Workplace and employment conditions

You will be attached to the Unit for Somatic Disease Surveillance, which is organizationally under Bispebjerg Hospital.

Your workplace and meeting point will be the outpatient clinics where you are responsible for screenings. You work full days at one outpatient clinic and rotate between your clinics during the week.

The position is a full-time maternity leave cover during daytime hours Monday to Friday. The position is to be filled from January 1, 2027 and is expected to last 12 months, with the possibility of extension depending on the leaving employee's leave.

The employment is in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
