About the job

Do you want to help make a difference for children and develop small strong individuals despite developmental disorders? Then read on here.

Nybroens Børnehus is a special kindergarten and nursery according to § 83 in the Child Act, with space for 11 children aged 0-7 years. We are located in scenic surroundings with forest and beach as the nearest neighbors. Last summer we were physically and organizationally merged with the city's two special schools, and we are now part of a larger special educational network within the field.

Our target group spans all forms of complex and more challenging developmental disorders. All children need support with alternative communication, assistance with social and emotional strategies into the children's communities, support to participate in and develop play from early non-verbal forms of play to beginning role play, support for regulating emotions and a tailored activity level to the context, support for tailored sensory stimuli throughout the day, and support to develop a greater degree of self-reliance in everyday life.

We have a predominance of children on the autism spectrum and children with socio-emotional difficulties. All children also have a developmental disorder and function somewhat below their age level. We prioritize the children's initiatives to play as a developmental foundation, learning and development as a starting point being fun and meaningful for the child, and it should take place in close cooperation with the child’s nearest relatives.

You should apply with us if you want to be part of our journey into the future. Over the last few years we have undergone a couple of large restructurings and resource adjustments and now stand at a new place with a small unit that we are building from the ground up. You as a new employee should be prepared to actively and engagingly step into this. We need to shape our approaches and practices from the ground up.

We base our view of children on Low Arousal thinking – that the child does well if it can, and with that we also expect a colleague who can see how they themselves affect interaction and who is willing to look at their own actions and adapt them in interaction with the children.

We predominantly work in a team-based manner, and thus there will also be a high degree of shared decision-making in the work plan, in the common professional development focus, and in the daily tasks. As far as possible we cover for each other in case of illness and planned absence, so there will also be a need for a certain level of flexibility within opening hours.

There will be opportunities to participate in a professional forum with the municipal kindergartens in the town, attend the national conference on special education, and we continually focus on joint development aimed at the autism spectrum and the use of alternative communication across Nybroen as a whole, as well as in the kindergarten itself.

We are in the process of building ourselves up as a special educational organization with the two special schools in the town, but also with other external municipal partners from CFP (Center for Special Pedagogy) and the children with disabilities department, where old structures have been broken down and new ones must be created and shaped in a joint collaboration. This means there is very little “we always do it this way” at play, and active input is expected on how we shape practice in the best and most meaningful way.

With you we will be a collegial group consisting of 4-5 educators, 1-2 pedagogical assistants, an occupational therapist, and usually a half-year PAU student.

We are looking for

A colleague with a big heart for the target group, who is passionate about the profession as well as the children and who values a collegial community around the task. We need a team player who uses collegial sparring and is professionally aware and reflective of their own and colleagues’ initiatives.

You will be assigned a couple of contact children, where you have the overall coordinating responsibility, but you must be able to participate as an adult throughout the Nyborgen and not only around your own contact children. You must be good at seeing opportunities for development, even if the results of your work are not always visible in the short term. You must be curious about solutions and able to work in a process-oriented manner.

We need an educator who can think creatively and innovatively both professionally and collegially, and who can take the child’s perspective, shape pedagogy, and with a valuable relationship make learning and development exciting, interesting and meaningful for the child through play.

We need an educator who can design content-rich play environments based on the child’s competences, who is willing and curious to develop and actively use alternative communication, and you must be prepared to produce a substantial amount of material yourself.

We need an educator who is interested in being in development — not only professionally but also personally and collectively as colleagues. An educator who dares to practice and sees value in reflecting alone and together with colleagues, parents, or external partners.

You must be naturally inclusive and able to contain difficult emotions such as sorrow, frustration, and powerlessness as part of the parent collaboration.

You must be able to keep many balls in the air at once, maintain an overview, make good priorities, and plan your own work time for the best for the whole house.

We are seeking an educator who is flexible, stable, responsible, and possessing a joy of life. You are acknowledgement-friendly and have a positive outlook on life. You prioritize collaboration and actively work for a good collegial community, and you love to play and create interaction with children, for whom both are often challenging.

What you can expect from us

  • We are a Kindergarten House with an educational environment that exudes warmth, hospitality, and creates a daily life with curiosity, safety, and joy.
  • We are a group of engaged and present adults who see, hear, and understand the child. We focus on the child’s individual development but also on the child’s participation in meaningful play communities.
  • We are a house in development that aims to build a strong collegial and professional foundation together.
  • A house where alternative communication is used, such as Sign Language to Speak, visual symbols, PECS, photos, etc.
  • We work based on an annual norm, where you will at times have a higher workload than others.
  • You will have influence on planning and organization of the daily work.
  • Being part of a work environment/culture where everyone takes responsibility.
  • A house that sets demands on responsible prioritization.
