About the job

A position as a consultant with specialty in pediatrics at Regionshospitalet Hammel Neurocenter (RHN), Hospitalsenhed Midt, within the complex and highly specialized area of rehabilitation of children and adolescents with acquired brain injury, is available for occupancy from January 1, 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Hammel Neurocenter is a highly specialized and internationally prominent university clinic that, as a professional development and research hospital, conducts neurorehabilitation for people with acquired brain injury based on individually tailored pathways built on a bio-psycho-social model of disease (the WHO-founded ICF criteria) with high interdisciplinarity and an inclusive approach.

About the position

We are seeking a pediatrician who, as part of the team in our clinic for children and young people (S6), is able to take responsibility in both the clinical, medical, scientific and/or organizational development of the field at Denmark’s leading neurorehabilitation hospital.

The position is a versatile clinical post with an expectation of involvement in teaching, education, and research within the highly specialized neurorehabilitation area. As part of the employment there will also be an expectation of active participation in elevating pediatric and adolescent neurorehabilitation across sectors at national and international levels.

The position is practically a full-time role, but we are open to considering a possible part-time arrangement where you would have functions at two hospitals and be involved in the medical work at both sites. Working hours and tasks are to be agreed between the hospitals after further arrangements.

The medical tasks in S6 include, among others

  • active participation in the interdisciplinary team work including active involvement in care pathway management
  • prognostication after brain injury
  • handling of autonomic disturbances
  • management of pathways where the patient is in a vegetative or minimally conscious state or where the patient has shunt-related issues

In addition there are professional tasks related to, for example, treatment of spasticity and epilepsy, which are general for the patient group at RHN.

We are seeking a physician who in clinical work

  • has an understanding of the whole person in the rehabilitation process
  • can lead in difficult patient cases characterized by significant cognitive symptoms
  • has a good overview of complex pathways for neurologically injured patients, often with significant comorbidity
  • has ambition to participate in professional development
  • can participate in an interdisciplinary cross-professional collaboration around the patient’s treatment
  • can be pathway- and professional-responsible in a potential subspecialty

The daily clinical work consists of

  • ward rounds and general clinical work
  • interdisciplinary conference activity
  • patient-family meetings in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
  • collaboration across sectors and outpatient work

Patient and family collaboration is essential in the treatment of brain-injured patients with a significant effect on treatment outcomes, which is why the consultant must be able to work from an inclusive approach. Thus, good communication skills with recognition, respect, listening approach, and clarity about one’s own professional discipline are required, both in the core task, in the interdisciplinary collaboration, and in patient-family collaboration.

Social medical tasks and cross-sector collaboration are an important part of discharge processes to ensure coherent patient pathways. Necessary training and upskilling will be offered within the above areas in collaboration with the medical group or externally through continuing education activities, after agreement with the chief physician.

Applicants, based on the special needs of the patient group at S6, should possess pediatric competencies, preferably pediatric neurology, neurology or neurosurgery, or have prior experience with specialized neurorehabilitation of children. Applicants with academic further education, including a PhD, will be given high priority.

We are organized with fixed medical attachment to the individual departments, which provides both great continuity and substantial responsibility for patient pathways. The current consultant position is in the team for pediatric and adolescent neurorehabilitation.

Consultants at Hammel Neurocenter are expected to participate in organizational tasks such as LMU, admission, development work, management meetings, student teaching, supervision of student researchers, teaching in the medical group or in the interdisciplinary team. In solving these tasks, the consultant is expected to closely collaborate with the department’s leadership regarding patient pathways, professional development, etc.

There is no staff responsibility, but there is an expectation to contribute to a good working environment and well-being in the department.

The medical staff comprises 16 consultants (13 in Hammel, 2 in Skive and 1 in Lemvig) with the following specialties: neurology, neurosurgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and general practice, in addition to a number of junior doctors in various positions. The close interdisciplinary collaboration between the physicians is a natural and necessary part of the work.

A comprehensive individualized introduction to the specialty and RHN will be planned.
