About the job

Would you like to make a difference for veterans and their relatives and become part of a strong professional community? And would you contribute to our good working climate in an environment where we prioritise professional quality, time for our tasks – and opportunities for professional development and educational courses?

Then read on and send us your application.

Who are we

You will become part of the Military Psychology Department at the Veterans Centre, which, with its two sections; the Clinic and International Operations, works with preventive efforts targeted at soldiers in international operations and treatment of psychological aftereffects.

The Veterans Centre’s headquarters are in Ringsted, where the top management and staff and support functions are housed. In the Military Psychology Department we are about 45 colleagues, including about 30 psychologists and 4 physiotherapists, who are distributed across local veterans centres at barracks in Aalborg, Holstebro/Karup, Fredericia, Slagelse/Ringsted and Høvelte/Svanemøllen.

You will have your daily routine at the local Aalborg Veteran Centre (Aalborg Barracks). You will be part of a strong, multi-disciplinary professional community where everyone has solid knowledge and experience in the veteran sector and works with commitment and purpose to create better conditions for our soldiers, veterans and their families.

We place high value on our multidisciplinary collaboration; treatment is often carried out in cooperation with the Veterans Centre’s social workers, employment advisers, outreach advisers and child advisers. We also work to further strengthen the holistic multidisciplinary effort through cross-disciplinary action plans and pathway coordination in multi-disciplinary teams.

You will also have 3 psychologists and a physiotherapist who work with body-oriented treatment as your new local colleagues in the Military Psychology Department. The team values the importance of their collaboration, meets for professional group meetings and continuously uses each other for professional discussions, sparring and mutual support – just as there is room for a laugh and social collegiality.

What the job offers

As a clinic psychologist at the Veterans Centre you will carry out clinical psychological assessment and triage, treatment and pathway coordination for our soldiers, veterans and their families – in individual, couple and group formats. In addition, you will be part of our national crisis response in the Realm (the Danish Realm).

You will naturally receive supervision and become part of a strong mono- and multidisciplinary community where sparring is at the forefront. You will also participate in seminars and ongoing competence development together with the entire psychology group.

In this position you report to the Clinic Director, Ole Nielsen, who is himself a psychologist and practises an informal leadership style, with a focus on presence and ongoing opportunities for contact and sparring. Ole says the following:

”I strive for a leadership practice that is both results-oriented with a focus on ensuring that the pathways provide the highest possible value to our veterans and relatives – and at the same time also focuses on the important aspects of the leader–employee relationship to support task execution, well-being and development.”

We work in a research-based way, where we develop, test and continuously evaluate new methods within cognitive behavioral therapy and trauma therapy. You will therefore have good opportunities to participate in research projects and other development work. We have recently implemented EMDR treatment in our department.

Currently we are working on a larger RCT project, where the effect of a modular treatment program (PACE) for complex PTSD (developed in the Military Psychology Department) is tested against Prolonged Exposure. We are working on strengthening substance misuse interventions and coordination, and we are moving toward testing: Stabilizing pre-treatment, a particularly targeted program for Moral Injury and intensive day treatment.

As a clinic psychologist with us you will therefore have the opportunity to apply your professional skills while also developing and strengthening your competencies within the psychotraumatology, psychotherapeutic and crisis psychology areas, as well as in clinical research. In addition, through your efforts you will make a tangible difference and create value for veterans, soldiers and their relatives.

Your primary responsibilities and tasks include

  • Assessment of veterans, soldiers and relatives
  • Psychotherapeutic treatment individually and in couples
  • Mindfulness group programs
  • National crisis duty (covering the Realm)
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration and pathway coordination for clients with other professionals at the Veterans Centre
  • Participation in research projects and development work

Why choose us

At the Veterans Centre, emphasis is placed on high professionalism in the execution of tasks, and decisions are made on an evidence-based basis. There is room to develop and to make mistakes, and we support a culture where we help each other to succeed, and where there is a high degree of trust and care for one another. You will experience having proper time for your tasks, as we prioritise quality in our work.

We have a good and informal working environment at the barracks, which constantly reminds us that we work for a higher purpose with flexibility in daily life, and where job satisfaction is high. Our latest APV strongly confirmed our experience that we have a very good psychological working environment. Our teams are characterized by using each other for collegial sparring, and we do not compromise on professional quality and development and supervision.

Continuing education is a major part of your professional development, and we ensure that over time you develop your competencies within psychotraumatology, psychotherapies and crisis psychology.

Among other things, this includes education programs in EMDR, Prolonged Exposure (PE) and the Military Psychology Department’s modular treatment program for complex PTSD (PACE).

You will have room for a life outside of your work without having to give up professional development and relevant professional challenges. You will have access to the latest knowledge and research in the field, and you will also contribute to new knowledge yourself.

We ensure that you are well introduced to the tasks and the organization, and you will be given responsibility for the tasks as you become equipped for them.

There is the possibility of flexibility in the working days by arrangement. You should also expect 1-2 travel days in connection with gatherings at seminars, etc., about every third month.

Who are you

You have completed a cand.psych. degree. You preferably have a couple of years of experience as a psychologist and preferably within clinical psychological practice. It is an advantage if you have experience from psychiatry with psychopathology and/or psychotraumatology or similar, but it is not a requirement. It is also an advantage if you have completed the practice education/authorization.

You want to work with veterans and their relatives who need help. You thrive in being an active part of a development-oriented environment and you are interested in actively participating in both mono- and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Employment conditions

Employment is in accordance with the current collective agreement between the Ministry of Defence and a number of academic associations for academics in the state (Academic Agreement).

Depending on your qualifications and competencies, there is potential for negotiation of allowances. There is an employer-funded pension scheme linked to the position.

This is a permanent full-time position with duty station at Aalborg Barracks.

Commencement 1 January 2027 or as agreed.

As an employee within the Ministry of Defence’s area you are subject to certain special conditions. You must, among other things, be able to obtain a security clearance and maintain the security clearance throughout the employment.

You are obliged as an employee to perform duties outside the country’s borders, including with units in international operations with a view to participation in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, humanitarian and other similar operations.

Special conditions related to the position

You should be aware that there are physical and functional health requirements attached to the position, and that the position also requires that you can be deployed on international missions. This means that the employment is conditional on you passing an assessment at the Selection Centre of the Personnel Command. The assessment consists of a physical test, a health assessment and a psychological resilience assessment.

The date of the assessment will be announced after the interviews and will have to be conducted and clarified before we initiate salary negotiations and employment. You can read about the physical requirements at forsvar.dk
