With a thesis placement at the National Bank you get an outstanding opportunity for daily sparring in your thesis writing process and at the same time an insight into whether the National Bank could be your future workplace.

We offer

Thesis placements for master's students at one of the Danish universities starting in autumn 2025, where you:

• will be part of a challenging academic environment on a daily basis
• will be provided with a mentor and a workspace throughout the entire thesis-writing process
• along the way in the thesis-writing process will be offered the opportunity to hold an onboarding and mid-project presentation, where you can receive sparring and new perspectives from experienced colleagues.

The thesis journey ends with a presentation at the National Bank, where you present your results. The thesis placement is also a good opportunity to assess whether the National Bank could be your future workplace after your studies. The National Bank provides you with an acknowledgment of 4,000 DKK per month during the period you have an agreement with your university to write your thesis.

What topics can I write my thesis about at the National Bank?

As a thesis student at the National Bank you can either write your thesis within one of the topics below, which the various departments deal with, or you can take your own idea for a topic as a starting point, which you only need to elaborate on in your application.

• Financing housing loans in other countries: In Denmark housing loans are typically financed with mortgage loans, while other countries use other financing forms. The thesis can compare European housing loan models’ risks, advantages and implications for banks and financial markets, and examine the consequences for financial stability if the Danish model approaches other countries.
• Connection between capital and growth: The capital level of credit institutions can affect both their operations and the development of the real economy. The thesis can examine the relationship between capital, profitability, lending and economic growth, with the possibility of incorporating return requirements, return on equity and the Modigliani-Miller theorem.
• Cyber risks, AI and financial stability: AI and advanced AI models change the threat landscape for financial companies. The thesis can examine when cyber incidents can threaten financial stability, focusing on, for example, attack forms, contagion channels, critical functions and factors that strengthen the resilience of companies and international cooperation.
• Generative AI and AI agents in work processes: Generative AI is already used in the National Bank to increase personal productivity and contributes to developing work processes. The thesis can examine how generative AI and AI agents can rethink and optimize workflows and create measurable value in a modern knowledge organization.
• Geo-economic fragmentation: Increased geo-economic fragmentation can affect economies across borders. The thesis can examine the implications for macroeconomic conditions, international capital movements or monetary policy transmission.
• Artificial intelligence and macroeconomics: The spread of artificial intelligence can impact key parts of the economy. The thesis can examine the consequences for, e.g., productivity, labor markets, inflation, investments or economic policy.
• Fixed exchange rate policy and Denmark's outward wealth: Denmark has a high net foreign wealth position and a large current account surplus. The thesis can investigate what drives high savings and low consumption, and analyze the implications for the fixed exchange rate policy and the interest rate spread to the ECB with a theoretical or empirical approach.
• Modeling interest rate risk: How well do different interest rate models match “stylized facts” about actual interest rate development – particularly from a risk management perspective? The thesis can investigate whether the interest rate model can simulate future interest rate paths that reflect actual interest rate risk, including absolute variation in rates and the relative variation between short and long rates.
• Portfolio allocation : How should an investor compose a portfolio of financial assets to achieve the best possible balance of risk and return? The thesis can address different asset classes, investment strategies, optimization methods or management of uncertainty.

You are planning your thesis and see a physical workspace at the National Bank as a good opportunity to receive additional sparring. You have a relevant academic background and will write your thesis on a topic within one of the National Bank's areas of work. You are good at communicating the material you study and using the academic environment you become part of during your thesis placement with us. We also expect you to contribute with your academic knowledge.
