About the job

At the Department of Organ Surgery and Transplantation, C , Center for Cancer Organ Diseases, Rigshospitalet, Inge Lehmannsvej, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, there is a position as a specialist physician available to be filled as soon as possible.

The positions are in the field of hepatology-pancreato-biliary surgery (HPB surgery). To be qualified for the position, one must be able to perform liver, pancreas and bile duct surgery, and in the longer term participate in organ procurement. The applicant is also expected to undergo training in robot-assisted HPB procedures. There will also be an expectation of an ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with other specialties as well as other disciplines, since the main attachment will be to a mixed medical/surgical ward with patients with different forms of organ failure.

An annual multidisciplinary assessment of about 4500 HPB patients is carried out and about 250 liver resections and 180 pancreas resections, as well as about 50 liver transplantations are performed annually. In addition, about 20 surgeries for hilar cholangiocarcinoma are performed. There is also a varying number of operations for iatrogenic bile duct injuries, about 10 annually.

Furthermore, about 1000 cancer patients with tumors in the esophagus, esophagogastric junction and stomach are assessed, and about 50 multi-operated patients with sequelae after abdominal catastrophes. In addition, participation in the surgical treatment of polytrauma patients.

The collaboration is not only multidisciplinary but also significantly between the medical specialties, which is why good collaboration skills are highly valued. As a permanent part of this, the applicant should contribute to the optimization and quality assurance of fast-track pathways in collaboration with the HPB team, anesthesiologists and surgical nurses.

The clinic also has an advanced endoscopy function, where ERCP and EUS will also be development areas for an HPB surgeon.

The position is associated with on-call obligations within the transplant area, mainly in connection with liver transplantation and multi-organ retrieval, as soon as the necessary competencies are obtained, to the extent they are not already present. Organ procurement takes place up to 80 times a year.

We offer an exciting job where you will function on an equal footing with the clinic's other specialist physicians and can contribute to development in all aspects of HPB surgery and in the building of minimally invasive surgery within the HPB area, soft tissue and upper GI cancers.

Currently about 25% of liver resections are performed laparoscopically or robot-assisted, which is expected to increase. In connection with synchronous resections of colorectal liver metastases and primary cancers, as well as direct invasion from pancreatic cancer, it would be advantageous if the applicant is broadly qualified.

The primary area of responsibility will naturally be within the HPB area; the specialist physician shall, together with the department's other specialists, contribute to the examination and treatment of patients referred to the department.

The applicant must be a specialist in surgery and in the assessment of the applicant, in addition to broad clinical experience, emphasis will be placed on research experience and skills in minimally invasive surgery.

The department has a pre- and post-graduate education obligation for doctors and other staff groups, and the applicant must therefore be willing to participate in both pre- and post-graduate teaching of both doctors and nurses.

The job description and function description as well as a more detailed departmental description can be obtained by contacting Chief Physician Jens Hillingsø, tel. 35 45 87 80, and Leading Consultant, HPB Responsible Christian Sturesson, tel. 35459034. It is a prerequisite for employment that competencies within the 7 medical roles can be documented.

Applications are addressed to: Chief Physician Jens Hillingsø and sent to: Human Resources, CKO, Rigshospitalet, Inge Lehmannsvej 7, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, so that they are in the hands of Human Resources no later than 15/11-2026.

Salary and employment terms follow the agreement for senior physicians between the Regions’ Payroll and Rates Board and the Association of Specialist Physicians.
