About the job

Do you want to help develop the geriatry of the future, where specialized geriatric treatment takes place both in the hospital and closer to the citizens?

The Geriatric Department at OUH in Odense and Svendborg is seeking specialists in internal medicine: geriatrics, who want to be part of our existing geriatric functions and at the same time contribute to the establishment and development of medical coverage at the new regional health and care campuses (SOP) on Funen.

The positions are intended to be filled from January 1, 2027 or by agreement.

A new function with geriatric anchoring

We are looking for specialists in geriatrics who want to combine clinical work in our existing Geriatric Department with the establishment and development of medical coverage at the regional health and care campuses (SOP), which is planned to commence operations on January 1, 2027.

The positions are organizationally and professionally anchored in the Geriatric Department, which has the overall medical treatment responsibility for citizens at the health and care campuses around the clock.

As a specialist you will thus have clinical functions both in the Geriatric Department in Odense and Svendborg and at the health and care campuses. At SOP you will help build and develop a new medical function with a focus on continuity, clear treatment plans and ongoing medical follow-up.

Rotation between SOP and the department's clinical functions

You will enter a rotation arrangement with the department's existing specialists in Odense or Svendborg. This means you will alternate between the SOP doctor function and clinical functions in the Geriatric Department either in Odense or Svendborg. The purpose of the rotation is to maintain your clinical and professional connection to geriatrics and ensure that experiences and knowledge are shared between the health and care campuses and the department's other functions.

The clinical tasks during the rotation may include inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and other geriatric functions at your assigned site.

The concrete frequency and duration of the rotation between the SOP function and the clinical functions in Odense or Svendborg has not yet been determined. You will help determine this so that it emphasizes continuity in patient and citizen pathways, stable collaboration relationships and a good working environment for staff, as well as the possibility to maintain and develop the geriatric competencies. Therefore no specific rotation frequency or percentage distribution between the functions has been set.

Your tasks at the Health and Care Campuses

  • Carry out medical assessment upon admission and establish a treatment plan. The first assessment is prioritized early, especially upon admission directly from the citizen's own home.
  • Manage planned supervision, medication review, treatment adjustment and follow-up, and assess acute and subacute changes in the citizen's condition.
  • Clarify the level of treatment, prognosis and rehabilitation potential at status and goals meetings, and assess the need for further diagnostics, treatment, or hospital admission.
  • Provide telephone and virtual advisory services to staff at the health and care campuses and ensure documentation and coordination upon discharge.
  • Contribute to teaching, professional sparring, development of workflows and instructions as well as quality follow-up and evaluation of the new function.

Your tasks in the department

As part of the rotation, you will join the clinical functions at the Geriatric Department in Odense or Svendborg together with the department's other specialists. The tasks are planned according to the department's needs and your competencies and may include:

  • Ward rounds with responsibility for evaluation, treatment and planning of coherent patient pathways in close collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Outpatient evaluation, treatment and follow-up of patients with geriatric issues.
  • Participation in the department's specialized functions, including fall assessment, orthogeriatrics and dementia assessment, depending on your attachment and function.
  • Guidance, supervision and teaching of trainee doctors as well as professional sparring with other staff.
  • Participation in the department's on-call duties according to the applicable on-call structure.
  • Contribute to quality development, development of clinical workflows and possibly research.

The rotation must ensure that you maintain and develop your broad geriatric competencies and keep a close connection to the department's clinical and professional environment. At the same time you contribute to knowledge sharing and cohesion between the SOP doctor function at the Health and Care Campuses and the department's other offerings.

Place of work

Your primary workplace will be the Geriatric Department in either Odense or Svendborg. In the SOP doctor function, the workday starts from your primary workplace and you visit the health and care campuses in an OUH car, as physical presence is planned according to citizens' needs in close cooperation with the campuses' nurses and the regional emergency nursing service. Tasks can be reprioritized in case of changed or acute needs.

The planned function on weekdays and weekends includes day duties and evening shifts following the day shift. The working hours in the department's clinical functions are planned according to the current on-call structure at each site.

We are looking for colleagues who

  • Are specialists in internal medicine: geriatrics and want to develop treatment close to the citizen.
  • Are interested in building a new function and actively contribute to developing workflows and cooperation relationships.
  • Are flexible and enjoy that tasks and organization are continuously adapted to the experiences from a new function.
  • Can work independently, prioritize clinical tasks and at the same time seek and offer professional sparring.
  • Have good communication skills and thrive with close collaboration across disciplines, sites and sectors.
  • Emphasize continuity and coherence in patient and citizen pathways.
  • Contribute to a good and professional working environment with engagement, openness and respect for colleagues' diverse perspectives.
  • Are keen to teach and contribute to quality development and shared professional learning

We offer

You will become part of a broad geriatric professional environment with competent and engaged colleagues and a focus on quality, patient safety and the working environment. You will have the opportunity to shape a new citizen-centered function while maintaining your connection to the department's clinical work through rotation, professional sparring and collaboration with the other specialists.
