Application Architect for a large application transformation in the Defence

About us

The group-wide program for Digital and Operational Transformation (DOT) was established mid-2025 and shall build the foundation for the data-centric defense of the future.

The Armed Forces face one of the country's biggest application transformations, which over the coming years will ensure better IT and data support for the Armed Forces' operational units as well as for corporate governance in the group.

The application transformation is part of the Armed Forces' overall digital transformation, modernizing the system landscape including the application portfolio. It is a very large governance task in both scope and number, where applications must be moved to the Armed Forces' new cloud-based IT infrastructure.

You will be part of the Office for Application Transformation in the pillar Execution. Your section is responsible for transforming the Armed Forces' existing IT domain-specific systems and applications to new infrastructure (Digital Backbone).

Execution constitutes together with Business the main tracks in the program. There is also a program secretariat.

About the position

As an application architect you will be the technical anchor for the transformation of applications to the new Digital Backbone. You will be responsible for ensuring that migration in the individual projects occurs in an architecturally cohesive, scalable and future-proof manner.

The role requires a strong technical overview combined with the ability to translate business requirements into concrete solution designs. You will work closely with project managers, technical teams, security officers and the central operations organization – and you will communicate complex technical solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Your main tasks and responsibilities will be

• Analyze existing applications, including business usage and solution architecture, integrations, security etc.
• Contribute to the development of qualification, criteria and assessment practices for prioritizing applications for transformation.
• Dialogue with system suppliers, sourcing partners etc. in connection with the technical planning of migration projects.
• Write solution designs for each application transformation, including setting target architecture, transition solution design, and data migration.
• Implement installation packages as well as assist in setting up platforms and applications.
• Advise project manager and technical teams on technology choices, platform configuration and best practices.
• Prepare system and security documentation.
• Contribute to establishing common architecture practices and design patterns for future projects in the program.

About you

You have a relevant academic or IT professional education and experience with or knowledge of application architecture in connection with application migration or modernization. Regardless of educational background you have a clear technical IT profile. It is an advantage if you have a relevant certification in cloud architecture (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect).

Overall, we want you to have experience with or knowledge of

• Application architecture in connection with application migration or modernization in environments with high security and compliance requirements.
• Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP), container technology and CI/CD pipelines.
• Integration architecture, e.g., API design
• Data migration
• Large IT systems, information security and data center infrastructure.
• Conveying complex technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders.

In addition you have good communication skills in both Danish and English.

Conditions of employment

If you are an academic you will be employed under the applicable collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and a number of academic organizations for academics in the state (Academic Agreement).

If you have an IT vocational education or another relevant education you will be employed under the applicable Common Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and Public Employees Organization – The State Sector (OAO-S common agreement) and the organizational agreement for office clerks, laboratory technicians and IT workers.

Depending on your qualifications and competencies there is a possibility for negotiation of supplements. There is an employer-funded pension scheme attached to the position.

The workplace is in Ballerup.

You should expect regular travel activity to the program's other locations.

As an employee under the Ministry of Defense's area you are subject to some special terms. You must, among other things, be security clearable and maintain the security clearance throughout the employment.

You have a duty as an employee to perform service outside the country, including at units in international operations with a view to participating in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacemaking, humanitarian and other similar operations.

About the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (FMI)

The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (FMI) is an agency under the Ministry of Defence.

FMI is responsible for the total defense and emergency materiel, IT and cyber security. It is us who procure, operate and dispose of materiel and IT for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Arctic Command, Special Operations Command, Home Guard, the Emergency Management Agency and the rest of the Ministry of Defence group. In addition our IT staff assist daily in resisting the cyber attacks the Ministry of Defence group is exposed to.
