About the job

If this sounds like something for you, the Endoscopy Department at Bispebjerg Hospital is looking for a nurse to join a team with high flow, high professionalism and high spirits

About us

The Endoscopy Department performs endoscopic examinations on patients in the gastrointestinal surgical and medical specialties. We mainly perform colonoscopy (endoscopic examination of the colon) and gastroscopy (endoscopic examination of the stomach), but also more advanced examinations, for example of the bile ducts. Patients come either as outpatients or are admitted for the examination.

We report organizationally under Abdominal Center K, which consists of outpatient clinics, a day surgery department, several wards, an operating theatre, and our own emergency reception. We are 23 nurses and 4 permanent doctors, and the department has 8 examination rooms and its own observation/rest room. We span a wide range of ages and experience, but what unites us is high professionalism and the patient being in focus.

We have several special functions that are performed independently by nurses. Some have taken a special qualification to perform colonoscopies themselves (KES), we have NAPS-trained nurses (Propofol sedation), as well as a mobile team of PEG nurses (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy). We also have a nurse-staffed reception with a nurse telephone line, which is open daily for advice and guidance.

What does a typical day look like?

WE gather briefly at 08:00 for a review and distribution of the day’s program, then we go to the rooms and prepare the patients. There is technical equipment that needs to be prepared, and you are either with a nurse colleague for the whole day, or share a so-called “call-out” between 2 rooms.

The various examinations typically last between 30 and 60 minutes, and in this period the patient must be picked up from the waiting room, prepared with PVK (peripheral venous cannulation), and informed and guided to create a safe space based on prerequisites and needs. There may be a need to assist with instruments for the examination, the patient may need analgesia, and values must be observed. Often the patient must be transported to observation before they are ready to go home.

On Thursdays we start with a longer morning meeting from 08:00-09:00, where we have breakfast together, short teaching or general information provided, before we go to the wards.

Things to know

  • We are open on all weekdays from 07:30-16:00, primarily on-site 08:00-15:00
  • The department is closed on weekends and holidays and we have reduced activity during school holidays, therefore we primarily take holidays here
  • locally in the department we have 5 annual afternoons with joint teaching on relevant topics, plus 1 full theme day where the department closes and where the doctors also participate
  • There is an opportunity to participate in gastroenterology continuing education
  • We host a Christmas lunch and a summer party, and we prioritise the social community

What can we offer

  • We are looking for an autonomous team player who contributes with professionalism and quality nursing
  • We are looking for you who thrive with varied and diverse tasks within the specialty
  • We are looking for you with an interest in nursing in short-term contact, but you do not need to have experience from endoscopy
  • We offer a structured training program that you will work with during the first year of your employment
  • You will be assigned 2 fixed mentors to help you with an introduction to the specialty and an introduction to the department
  • The introduction is planned based on your competences and in collaboration with the department’s 2 nurses with clinical specialty functions
