Anesthesia and Intensive Care also operates the hospital’s intensive care unit with 10 high-dependency beds and the 24/7 emergency physician car, covered by the department’s own doctors.

The medical staff currently consists of 26 specialists, 12 doctors at the introductory and main training levels. There are 6 chief nurses who together lead about 260 nurses distributed across the intensive care unit, recovery unit, operating theaters, anesthesia unit, planned surgery Esbjerg and planned surgery Grindsted. The department also handles planning and booking of operations in central booking.

Research in the department is highly prioritized and we strive to have 2-3 doctors enrolled in a Ph.D. program at all times as far as possible. There is also attached a research responsible consultant who facilitates and supports research conducted by the department. The hospital’s research department provides support in the form of release time for research activities, such as protocol writing

In the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care you will become part of a team of positive, forward-thinking, engaged, active and good-humored colleagues.

Training

We have a good training environment in the department which is highlighted, among other places, in the latest Inspector’s Report from 2022 which can be read here, just as in 2023 we won the Health Authority’s prize for the country’s best training department.

Every six months an internal training evaluation is carried out, where the responses show a high level of satisfaction among the department’s trainee doctors.

Our training responsible consultant/overlæge develops an 8-week introductory program that will accelerate your anesthesiological competencies under the guidance of engaged and responsible colleagues.

The training program consists of intensive training and formal teaching beyond the region’s courses. Here we gladly use clinical simulation and skill training at the hospital’s simulation and manikin center (LAKK). At the same time you will receive training in the use of ultrasound on both intensive care and surgical patients, as well as the placement of an epidural catheter, CVP and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. These competencies, as well as resuscitation calls and trauma admissions, you will handle as a pre-call, possibly supervised, after the introduction period.

A close cross-disciplinary collaboration makes it possible for you to gain teaching experience by teaching different groups (nurses, doctors and students).
