About the job

Do you want to lead Nyborg Municipality's largest cultural institution in the most beautiful surroundings in a protected building? Are you passionate about leadership, collaboration and development? And are you a culture person with grand gestures?

In Nyborg Municipality, over the past few years we have targeted our efforts at urban development, cross-institutional collaboration among cultural institutions, and active user involvement. We have grand gestures and look forward, among other things, to Nyborg Castle opening in 2028 for the benefit of the entire municipality's development.

In the Organization and Development department, to which Nyborg Library belongs organizationally, there is good cross-unit collaboration spanning from HR, physical urban development, cultural events, leisure facilities, business development, tourism, and the cultural sector. The task portfolio is broad and touches all residents and businesses in Nyborg Municipality.

As the head of Nyborg Library, you will become part of the leadership group in Organization and Development and thus contribute to the development of the entire area.

We now seek a library director for Nyborg Library and Nyborg Local History Archive, who together with us will work for an attractive municipality and who will be a front-runner for how we act and interact with citizens and users in our municipality.

You will lead 18 permanent employees and 8 shelving staff (student jobs). Employees cover a wide professional field and bring very different professional backgrounds. They are specialists working toward a common goal of creating an inspiring, approachable and professional library offering. It is a dedicated and diverse workforce that thrives best with freedom under responsibility and who do their utmost to deliver quality and service to partners and users.

You will be part of a leadership group of 5 in the department Organization and Development. The department is characterized by a culture built on trust, psychological safety and high ceilings. You will both receive and give a great deal of freedom in leadership. You report to the area manager.

About the position

As library director, your primary task will be to contribute to the development and operation of the three libraries in Ullerslev, Ørbæk and Nyborg; in addition, also the two library services with which we have agreements at Nyborg High School and Nyborg Prison.

The libraries in Ullerslev and Ørbæk are both combined school and public libraries under your leadership, but in close cooperation with the leadership of the two schools.

It is a large and complex leadership task in a time when there are high demands on the libraries' offerings and development, but where you must also contribute to clarifying the library's value in society.

Your staff work daily spread across six locations, so remote leadership will be an element of everyday life, where it is essential to make yourself accessible.

As library director you are also responsible for Nyborg Local History Archive, which is solely run by volunteer enthusiasts. The archive is a well-run local history archive on three premises in Ullerslev, Ørbæk and Nyborg, where you primarily have contact with the three volunteer archivists in daily operations.

We seek a library director who thrives in an outward-facing role, where you will also participate in collaborations and networks both internally and externally. It will be relevant to consider participation in, for example, the Library Directors Association, the Danish Library Association and The Digital Public Library.

In addition, your time will be spent on

  • Strategic development of Nyborg Library and Nyborg Local History Archive.
  • Sparring with your staff and leadership colleagues.
  • Quality, time, and financial management.
  • Personnel management. Freedom under responsibility in a trusting and clearly defined framework.

About you

We are looking for a library director who can develop an organization in eye level with the users, and who can embrace the breadth of the position so you can advise upwards in the organization in all your areas.

We think you can do this if you

  • are positive, curious and good at listening.
  • master the combination of informing, involving and being accessible.
  • have political acumen and understanding of necessary political priorities.
  • have experience with collaborations, partnerships and are relationally strong.
  • are both visionary and action-oriented.
  • can set a clear, strategic direction and create enthusiasm around it.
  • thrive in a humorous and informal tone of voice.

In addition, we expect you to have

  • a long higher education.
  • solid management experience and preferably experience with overall financial management.
  • experience from a politically governed organization.
  • experience from the cultural world – and preferably from the library sector.
