About the job

Do you/you all want to write a thesis in spring 2027 in a strong academic environment with a close connection to the political agenda? Then you have the opportunity to write an economic or political science thesis in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance. Here you will get good opportunities for professional sparring on policy development in practice, implementation of reforms, management of the public sector, economic theory, macroeconomic models and econometric issues in daily work.

In addition you will have access to office space in the ministry, computer, access to register data (including the ministries' model laws and among other things the Ministry of Employment's DREAM case database), the ministry's modeling apparatus (including the new model MAKRO and the climate-economic model GrønREFORM), or other relevant data.

Topics

The thesis topic must be within one of the areas that the Ministry of Finance deals with and preferably contribute to giving the office new knowledge on a concrete issue.

It could, for example, be within the education and training sector, the employment sector, the health sector, the social sector, the elderly sector, the affordable housing sector, modernization, digitization, the tax area, the climate area, macro- and climate-economic modeling, a quantitative assessment of the effects of specific parts of economic policy on another area, or other macroeconomic topics relevant to the Ministry of Finance. It could for example be:

  • Impact studies of active labor market policy, e.g. motivation, retention and upskilling effects of measures in the employment area.
  • Effect evaluations of income transfers and supported employment, e.g. the impact on employment, education, etc. of changed rules in the sickness benefit, cash benefits, flex jobs or public employment area.
  • Effect analyses or evaluations of larger welfare policy initiatives, e.g. welfare agreements or social investments
  • Health economic analyses, e.g. in the medical field or the primary health care sector including e.g. general practice, prevention and psychiatry.
  • Analyses of public governance, e.g. the effect of central steering instruments on municipalities' and regions' ability to achieve results.
  • Analyses of expenditure developments in municipalities and regions, including linkage to demographic development.
  • Dynamic effects (behavioral effects) of changes in economic policy concerning the expenditure and/or revenue side of the public finances
  • Analyses of AI and new technologies’ impact on the labor market and the macroeconomy, e.g. effects on productivity, employment, wage and competition conditions.
  • Macro- and climate-economic modeling and empirical analyses of the economy's adaptation to different types of macro- and climate-economic shocks and reforms. Within climate-economic modeling (GrønREFORM) it would be advantageous to analyze one of the areas where the model is most well-founded, such as agriculture, energy supply, industry or waste.
  • Analyses of welfare challenges among children and young people, e.g. linked to academic results, later educational paths, etc.
  • The effects of the student aid system (SU) on, e.g., field of study choice, study duration, working while studying or other educational behavior.
  • The effects of Covid-19 in the education system on, e.g., test results and transition to further education.
  • Analyses of young people without connection to education or the labor market, e.g. how municipal practice, local education and job opportunities, early pathways, education and work experience influence the likelihood of entering and remaining in ordinary education or employment.

The topics thus span a broad range, and we would very much welcome an academic outline with you/your group. For analyses within macro- and climate-economic modeling it would be advantageous to have prior knowledge of GAMS.

The practical

The Ministry of Finance has 5-10 thesis positions for students in relevant social science programs (cand.scient.pol., cand.polit./oecon. etc.).

We conduct ongoing interviews and also offer ongoing thesis placements.

If you are interested, or would like to hear more about practical experiences, you can contact the special consultant (and former special student at the Ministry of Finance) Gustav Corty Dam at [email protected]/2341 2071 with a first academic outline.
