Could you imagine participating in and initiating research projects related to the veterinary preparedness? Then you may be our new colleague in Bacteria, Parasites and Fungi.

About the position

We are seeking a veterinarian with particular competencies in bacteriology to support emergency diagnostics, surveillance tasks as well as research and development tasks. As part of a team of veterinarians you will

You will work closely with veterinarians within a range of fields, as well as with physicians and other experienced professionals in microbiology, and you will have the opportunity to develop your competencies within clinical microbiology with issues related to both animal health and public health. You will be involved in research activities together with other veterinarians, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians. You will come to work with colleagues within DK-VET at the University of Copenhagen and special research activities and possibly teaching activities can be handled there by agreement.

Education, experience and personal qualifications

You have a degree as a veterinarian with special experience in veterinary bacteriology. We prefer a candidate who has a PhD in the field. It is necessary that you can communicate in one of the Scandinavian languages. It would be desirable if you have experience including:

  • Bacteria of significance for both animals and humans (zoonoses)
  • Knowledge of Danish agriculture and animal husbandry

You will receive thorough training in all areas within bacteriology relevant for the veterinary preparedness within the Danish Veterinary Consortium and in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen there may be opportunities for Academic Continuing Education e.g. in the form of diplomat education.

About the department

The Department of Bacteria, Parasites & Fungi, which is part of Statens Serum Institut, consists of about 130 employees who work closely with other disciplines within infectious disease preparedness to provide diagnostic or epidemiological surveillance of infections in animals and humans. The department also performs specialized diagnostic analyses with accompanying advice on prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The department undertakes tasks within the Danish Veterinary Consortium (DK-VET), representing a collaboration between the University of Copenhagen and Statens Serum Institut. DK-VET manages the veterinary authority agreement, which includes a wide range of tasks that ensure animal health and protect public health.

Your upcoming team

You will work closely with other veterinarians at Statens Serum Institut and at the University of Copenhagen, as well as with physicians, bioinformaticians, technicians and laboratory staff. We are responsible for emergency diagnostics within veterinary bacteriology and have close collaboration with colleagues from the National Reference Laboratory for Antibiotic Resistance.

We offer

SSI is an internationally recognized workplace for solving national and global health tasks. You will become part of an organization with 900 employees who perform meaningful tasks that strengthen human and animal health through research and preparedness.

You will work with different scientific disciplines in close collaboration with experts in an inspiring workplace. You will be part of an institute that offers flexible working conditions and the opportunity to work with current issues in veterinary medicine and with relation to public health. The working language is normally Danish, but daily communication with colleagues can also take place in English.
