About the job

Service location: Central Jutland (Midtjylland), Aalborg and Vejle

Do you want to help take care of those who take care of us? Then you now have the opportunity to apply for a position as psychologist in the Danish Police’s Psychological Service, Support and Counseling.

Background

Police employees are driven by a strong dedication and willingness to place themselves at the front of the queue to help others and make a difference for society - regardless of strain and potentially with risk to their own lives. It involves a risk of work-related psychological stress for the individual employee.

As an employer in a high-risk profession, we commit to looking after the welfare of our employees. We have an extended responsibility to ensure timely and relevant help for employees with psychological stresses.

In the new police act for 2026-2030, the need to take even better care of current and former police employees is recognized. There is now an opportunity for the police to offer a service-related, interdisciplinary treatment pathway for significant work-related stress reactions (anxiety, stress, depression and indications of PTSD). This is a milestone for Danish police.

We are expanding considerably over a 3-year period with about 30 new hires – approximately half of whom have a psychologist background. In this context we are seeking psychologists who, together with the existing team, can contribute to this task.

About the Psychological Service, Support and Counseling

Today we are a total of 24 psychologists, 6 social-educational counselors, two administrative staff and four section managers. The Psychological Service, Support and Counseling is part of the Danish Police but physically the psychologists are located around the country. We cover all 15 police districts as well as the National Police.

We develop and work according to national concepts, including mental preparedness, violent incidents, serious injury in service and aftercare. The Psychology Service, together with other units in Group HR, helps set the direction for a healthy, mentally healthy working life, where both organizational and individual levels are addressed. We are well-liked in the organization, and there is strong demand for our services from both management and employees.

About the tasks

We operate from a systematic support concept that detects, handles and prevents work-related stresses. With the new police act we now add actual treatment pathways to the list of services.

The Psychology Service’s support measures will therefore going forward consist of five core services:

  • Individual support conversations (shorter pathways of 3-5 sessions)
  • Treatment pathways for significant stresses (interdisciplinaryly founded)
  • Psychological debriefings as follow-up to violent incidents
  • Supervision for selected employees with special functions, e.g., incident commanders, shift leaders and those working with abuse against children
  • Status checks for police recruits and police officers in operational positions.

Not all psychologists have to do everything, and no one should do just one thing. With the expansion of our scope of work, we expect a greater degree of specialization at the task level for us, but with a daily life characterized by a lot of variation. We tailor the task portfolio to fit your experience base and into the already existing regional teams.

We are seeking experienced psychologists (e.g., trauma, adult therapy) who will, among other things, contribute to interdisciplinary treatment pathways for current and former employees and supervision of other professional groups (employees whose job entails high emotional demands)

You will also be involved in the psychology service’s emergency response/on-call system as well as in a broader crisis preparedness for national events or occurrences. This can include planned and unplanned larger actions/incidents such as summits, natural disasters, terrorist attacks or major accidents.

About you

First and foremost you must find it meaningful to work in the police, and you must value collegiality and interdisciplinary collaboration.

You are a licensed psychologist and enjoy working independently with a high degree of influence on planning your daily routine. You are motivated by the clinical/therapeutic aspect of psychology, but also by a broader organizational focus on preventing stresses.

You put tasks and people at the center. You can see yourself working in the police with the special psychological challenges and tasks that apply here. It is an advantage if you have experience working in a public, politically governed organization with the specific requirements and frameworks it entails.

Your approach to the work is proactive and approachable, and it is natural for you to obtain input for your task solving and to involve other stakeholders. You are particularly attentive to the importance of a multidisciplinary, holistic approach and to ensuring that the most severe stress reactions are managed and alleviated in close collaboration between different actors and through coordinated pathways. In our setting this means involving our internal social workers as well as external actors, including psychiatry and physiotherapy.

You are skilled at building trustful relationships, and you value good cooperation with employees and managers with different professional backgrounds across the organization. Finally, you want to contribute professionally as well as socially within the overall employee group. We aspire to a culture in the Psychology Service where collaboration, knowledge sharing and good collegiality are core values put into practice.

About the workplace

You will be employed by the Danish Police with service location initially in Aalborg, Vejle or Herning (likely). The latter service location is not yet finalized but will be geographically anchored in Central Jutland.

From here you will handle the psychologist tasks in close cooperation with both psychologists and social-educational counselors attached to the geographical area.

You should expect to participate in meeting activities in East or West Denmark a few times a year to maintain professional sparring, exchange of experiences and collaboration with other colleagues in the center despite geographical dispersion. It is important to us that we present ourselves as one Psychology Service, Support and Counseling section – even though we have different service locations.

Part of the internal meeting activity takes place digitally, and there will be opportunities for remote work when tasks allow.

You will be covered by an internal supervision scheme, where you meet with colleagues in your own geographical area. In addition, you will be covered by our agreement for individual supervision by an external supervisor, as we place great emphasis on staff in the Psychology Service/Support and Counseling taking “their own medicine” to stay long-term sustainable.

Salary and employment conditions

You will be hired under the collective agreement in accordance with the agreements between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). You will be placed as a senior consultant or chief consultant based on qualifications. The positions are to be filled in autumn 2026, or as soon as possible.

You have a high degree of influence on planning most of your workdays.

There will be onboarding and training activities in connection with your start, and it is important to us that you feel thoroughly introduced to the tasks.

It is a condition of employment that you can obtain a security clearance, just as you must be able to maintain the clearance throughout your employment. You should be aware that this part of the recruitment process can take some time.

You must be comfortable with being on the move and have interfaces with many colleagues – both in the Psychology Service and in the police districts.

Due to the travel required by the role (e.g., driving to tasks in the district), you must have a category B driving license and be able to provide your own car.

The Danish Police has a smoke-free working time.

We recommend naming your documents so it is clear which job you are applying for. In addition to the application and CV, please upload your exam certificate. All documents must be uploaded in pdf format.

We view diversity as a strength and encourage all interested, regardless of background, to apply for the position.

Application deadline: 26 October 2026. It is important that you clearly indicate in your application which service location you are applying for – Aalborg, Vejle or Herning/Central Jutland.

We expect to conduct interviews in Aalborg in mid-November 2026.

In the police we all work together for safety and security

We have about 18,000 employees in the police, where about two-thirds are police officers and police cadets and the rest are civilian employees. We are all deeply committed to ensuring that the national community is a safe place to live and reside – whether we work with operational readiness, prevention or investigation, or contribute with one of the many other important functions in the police.

The Danish Police is the highest authority of the police and has overall responsibility for the national community’s 14 police districts and the National Unit for Special Crime (NSK). We ensure that the police have the right frameworks for police work and development. We stand behind good leadership and education. Behind service weapons that match the task. Behind proper help if the wound has affected the mind of our police colleagues. We stand behind technology that follows development.

Behind the distribution of resources. Behind the police of the future. It is us – the Danish Police – who are always behind those who stand at the front.
