About the job

Ph.D. stipend: Advanced imaging diagnostics for improved surgical treatment of skin cancer

Are you a doctor with an interest in surgery, medical technology and artificial intelligence? Would you like to help develop the future of imaging diagnostics that can assist surgeons in removing all cancer the first time?

Then you now have the opportunity to become part of a research project at the intersection of clinical research and engineering science.

It is a fully funded Ph.D. position with employment at the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burn Treatment in collaboration with the Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery & Audiology Clinic, Rigshospitalet, while the Ph.D. education is carried out at DTU Compute as part of the Technical University Hospital (TUH).

About AIMICS AIMICS (AI-driven Multidimensional Imaging Platform to Improve Cancer Surgery) is an interdisciplinary research and innovation project supported with 30 million Danish kroner by the Innovation Fund. The project’s vision is to develop an AI-based platform that during surgery can help the surgeon assess whether the tumor has been radically removed. The Ph.D. project will work with advanced imaging technologies such as 3D ultrasound and mid-infrared imaging with a focus on improved surgical treatment of skin cancer.

As a Ph.D. student you will be responsible for patient inclusion in a clinical study and work closely with the engineer-Ph.D. students at DTU who develop models for AI analyses. At the same time you will also collaborate with Ph.D. students from ENT who work with the same technologies to assess resection margins in head and neck cancer. The aim is to develop clinical decision support systems that can improve surgical precision, reduce the number of reoperations and improve patient treatment.

Research environment You will be employed at the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burn Treatment, Rigshospitalet and enrolled as a Ph.D. student at DTU Compute as part of the Technical University Hospital (TUH). The project is carried out in collaboration with the Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery & Audiology Clinic, Rigshospitalet, as well as the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Compute and DTU Electro) and the startup company 3Sonic.

You will become part of the cross-disciplinary research environment in SURGiC, where clinicians and engineers work closely together on the development and clinical implementation of new diagnostic technologies.

In addition to the Ph.D. project you are expected to contribute to teaching medical and engineering students as well as disseminating research results at national and international conferences. You will also gain experience with clinical research protocols, advanced imaging technologies and translational medical technology research.

Employment The employment is with the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burn Treatment, Rigshospitalet, in accordance with the applicable agreement for doctors. Expected start date is January 1, 2027 or as agreed.
