About the job

Surgical Department, North Zealand Hospital

Do you want to develop as a surgeon and work purposefully towards specialty certification in colorectal surgery or acute surgery?

The Surgical Department at North Zealand Hospital is seeking an engaged specialist in surgery. With us you will have high surgical activity, a strong professional community and an individual development plan aimed at UEMS certification. We are looking for a colleague who will also actively contribute to the department's clinical operations, quality, research and organizational development and who meets patients, relatives and colleagues with care and consideration.

We offer targeted professional development

You will become part of a structured program where your subspecialty interest is clarified within the first 1-2 years. Thereafter a targeted training program is laid out towards certification in either colorectal surgery or acute surgery.

The department supports the program through a mentoring scheme and focused placements. If the necessary competencies cannot be acquired locally, national or international training programs may be included.

You will have the opportunity to develop as a surgeon, researcher and quality development professional and to take responsibility for integrated patient pathways in a department with high professional ambitions, where highly specialized treatment goes hand in hand with care and consideration for the individual patient.

Your duties and responsibilities

You will carry out clinical work, participate in on-call duties and contribute to the development of the department's treatment offerings. We expect you to take responsibility for both the individual patient, the professional community and the department's overall tasks. In meetings with patients and relatives, you are expected to combine professional decisiveness with care and consideration.

Research and development

You have documented academic experience and contribute to research and development activities, for example through research projects, publications, supervision, quality development or implementation of new evidence. You can translate scientific knowledge into improvements in patient care and help strengthen the department's academic profile.

Quality and patient safety

You have experience with quality monitoring and quality development, including clinical quality data, audits and improvement work. You contribute to systematic follow-up on results and to a culture where data are actively used for learning and improving the professional and patient-experienced quality as well as patient safety. The improvement work must support patient care characterized by high professional quality, patient safety and care and consideration.

Operations and patient pathways

You understand the relationship between clinical activity, capacity utilization, productivity, patient flow and resource use. You are interested in and preferably experienced with planning, prioritizing and optimizing clinical pathways and contribute constructively to the department's operations and goal fulfillment. At the same time you can balance efficient operation with care and consideration for the individual patient's needs and overall treatment course.

We expect that you

  • are a specialist in surgery and have ambitions for certification in colorectal surgery or acute surgery
  • are proactive, collaborative and development-oriented
  • work with high professional integrity and show care and consideration for patients, relatives and colleagues
  • communicate professionally and empathetically and collaborate across disciplines
  • are a role model for the department's values and contribute to a work environment characterized by respect, collaboration and accountability.

About the Surgical Department

The department is organized into medical teams within acute surgery, abdominal wall surgery, HPB/upper gastrointestinal evaluation, colorectal surgery, endoscopy and medical gastroenterology. We treat a wide range of patients with a particular focus on acute surgical pathways, biliary diseases, hernias, colorectal cancer as well as inflammatory and functional bowel diseases.

We work systematically with research, education and development of professional, organizational and patient-experienced quality. Our goal is coherent patient pathways with high professional standards, short waiting times, high patient safety and active involvement of patients and relatives. Care and consideration are fundamental principles for both our patient treatment and our internal collaboration.

The Surgical Department covers the North Zealand Health Council and is located in Hillerød and Frederikssund. We are about 250 staff spread across wards, outpatient clinics, stoma clinic and endoscopy department. In a few years, activities will come together at the New North Zealand Hospital in modern facilities for patient care, research and education.

On-call conditions: You join the backup duty team together with experienced chief residents in a roughly 7-shift, two-part on-call. The surgical on-call team consists of a pre-call, mid-call, back on-call in-house and senior on-call when summoned. In addition there is daily specialist coverage with acute surgical focus 08:00-18:00 on weekdays.
