Health science students? Work as a full-time substitute or on-call substitute in home care or in nursing homes in the City of Copenhagen

Do you naturally meet people with patience, empathy and an appreciative approach? And do you have time and bandwidth to make a difference for older and vulnerable people who live at home or in a care home? Then here is a great student job.

We are seeking several health-care students – e.g. nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social and health care assistants or social and health care helpers – who want to work alongside their studies or full-time work.

A student job at a nursing home or in home care can be an obvious opportunity to gain experience working with people, and you can apply your professional knowledge while you study.

You can apply as a substitute at a nursing home or in home care or as a service assistant in home care. We have 39 nursing homes as well as five home care units in the City of Copenhagen , so we can quickly offer you an interview in a part of the city of your choice. We have the most vacancies as weekend substitutes, so if you have the opportunity to work every second or third weekend, it increases your chances of being considered for an open position.

You can be hired as a fixed substitute part-time or as an on-call

As a fixed substitute on a part-time contract you are employed in a part-time position of up to 12 hours per week. The hours can be accumulated, so you can e.g. work every 2nd or 3rd weekend or have fixed shifts on weekdays.

As an on-call substitute you are assigned to one (or more) nursing homes or home care, which contacts you regularly when they, for example, have a sick leave or similar on the workplace. You are not guaranteed a specific number of hours, but you can say yes to all the hours you are offered.

Substitute at a nursing home or in home care

If you want to work as a substitute, you help with the daily tasks and the care for elderly citizens at nursing homes or in home care.

Most vacancies are as weekend substitutes, typically with work every second or third weekend. In some workplaces there is also a need for substitutes on weekdays and in day, evening or night shifts.

If you would prefer a position without care tasks, you can apply as a service worker.

Service worker in home care

As a service worker you are out with citizens primarily during daytime on weekdays.

Here you help citizens with practical tasks at home, e.g. cleaning, laundry and shopping. Personal care is not part of the position.

We are looking for you who are service-minded, cooperative and keen to help others. You must be able to communicate clearly in Danish.

Tasks and expectations

If you have experience working with older and vulnerable people, you will probably already be familiar with many of the tasks and have a good starting point for getting started.

Regardless of experience, we expect you to

• be reliable, so your colleagues and citizens experience predictability in daily life
• take initiative and approach new tasks and challenges with curiosity and engagement
• be attentive to the citizen's condition and can relay important observations and information through documentation
• be able to cycle (if you want to work in home care)

Terms of employment

We can offer employment as soon as possible after the application deadline when we have found the right match between you and one of the workplaces that needs substitutes.

Your terms of employment vary depending on whether you are hired as an on-call substitute or a fixed substitute, but always in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.

We obtain a criminal record and take references in connection with the hires.

If you have previously been employed by the City of Copenhagen

If you are considered for a position at a municipal unit, we will check whether you have been terminated or dismissed from the municipality within the last three years and share relevant information with the hiring manager.

This may also include information about criminal offenses that led to termination or dismissal from the City of Copenhagen, information about abuse of substances such as a positive alcohol test or information about medical history that could be of significant importance for a new employment with the municipality.
